Amazing tank , how come you dont have a redtailed catfish in there ?

Dave.

I think its fantastic that you brought this up, as it brings up a very important subject about fish keeping that too many people ignore. I don't have a RTC for several reasons.

First, I already had the two TSNs (one of whom was a rescue) and the RTCxTSN (who I happily won at the August 2008 SoCal meet). I had done my research before I brought these guys home and knew the growth rate of these guys. These three guys are 15-16 months old, and this 600 gallon tank will only last the current residents probably a year (hopefully). I don't want to overcrowd the tank and just end having to upgrade any sooner than I already know I will need to.

Secondly, the RTC's are giant, smiling, hungry mouths, and until recently these guys shared a tank with a few 'smaller' fish. I would have been concerned that my eels would have been lunch even though they're 20-25" long and fat. I know my 10+" tinfoil barbs (rescues themselves) would have been long gone. The big TSN and the RTCxTSN made several attempts at these guys even though they were fed very well and they didn't actually fit down the hatch.

Thirdly, the unfortunate truth is that there are always large RTCs in need of a home. I kind of figured that if we were going to be able to provide for one of these guys, I should really rescue one rather than to encourage the importation of more of these giant catfish. Too often these guys die from poor water quality, and tiny tanks (at least compared to the monstrous size of the fish). Just cause it keeps the fish wet doesn't mean that the tank is large enough.

A 600 gallon tank seems huge until you put monsters in it.

definitely true Jen,

I had thought about housing a rtc or 2 in my outdoor pond, but I have koi and every time I've seen that attempted it ends up rtc and no koi. (not to mention temp and ph differences).

The same thing could be said of arapaima's, dovii, bass, and most other true monsters. A responsible fish keeper knows their limits and the limits of their setup. As big as 600g seems, it's a puddle compared to what these fish have in the wild plus rtc grow up to 4' quite a turn around issue there. lol

Congratulations, I saw this thread shortly after you started it and just came across it again today. Very nice. Great job you and your hubby did. Those cat's look very happy and should be able to enjoy that tank for quit some time.

So I guess the frickin guy never moved his car...:shakehead:thumbsdow But I like what you did to work with the space you had. If he ever does come to move it he's gonna take a look and be like:OMG::WTF::owned:...Lol:ROFL:. First question were can I get that preformed pond that is hanging above the car? And if you don't mind how much is it new?

Secondly I was also going to ask you about a RTC but you just answered my question a couple of post's ago. I just wanted to add that if you have never owned a RTC, (I don't know if you have or not), they are by far one of the most personable cat's you will have ever owned. I understand why you stayed away from them before so that they didn't eat your smaller fish in your previous tank. But I also understand that you might be inerested in getting a rtc when the time is right. If you do, you won't be sorry, heck he'll probably be your new favorite fish. I have all the same fish you do in the 600 minus the giraffee(never seen one for sale). And my rtc is probably my fav. (Don't get me wrong they are all my favorites, but he is really special). Mine is around two years old and around 20-21inches. I have always kept him by himself, in his very own tank with pristine water conditions. He's never had to compete for food and was always well fed(just not fed till he was going to pop). Super healthy, I'm just saying they don't have to grow as fast as everybody says.....

But once again, you did a wonderfull job setting this up, and your fish are amazing. I can't wait to see them grow and see many more pic's of the progress. As before stated, I would go really easy on their feedings till everything is established and staying constant. Your fish look very healthy and plump, it won't bother them much at all to go with less food for a while. Better safe than sorry. I've read some of your responses and I already know you are ontop of the water parimiters. GREAT JOB!!!

i like how the clown knife was swimming along and then bumped into the wall and almost looked around and was embarassed.

Sorry if this has been covered. I am just curious. What does the complete filtration system consist of ? You mentioned an FX5 and are those sand filters ? What kind of turnover does it have ? Please pardon my ignorance especially if this has already been covered. Looks amazing!
