no it stays on the bottom i have never found any sand in any of my filters and i have pfs in all of my tanks

i bought mine from the local pool store for about $12 per 50 pound bag. you will need 2 bags for your 180
to clean it dump the pfs in a 5 gallon bucket and run a hose in it untill the water runs clear (do this outside)
it is real easy to clean and i think it looks awesome

Mike. Look how small his fish are. Of course they can't kick up PFS. I had PFS with 14-16" cichla and they kicked it up. And got into my filters. Go with tile
