6g nano

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my 20 long nano reef doesnt make enough stuff to skimm off so i dont even use a skimmer at all on mine... just a HOB for mechanical filtration is all i have on mine and it does perfectly fine...

hang on back (filter) like aquaclears, penguins, etc

I have a Backpac on my 15g frag tank with no fish, that pulls out plenty of skim.

bromie88, Have you looked into a used skimmer? They're everywhere on Reef Central.

I'll have to try it... which one is it? maybe a link...

Why are FW filters nitrate factories?
Should I take my two HOBs off my 10g?

EDIT: Sorry for the thread jack

im told canister filters become nitrite factories because the water moves too quickly over the media in the canister, which doesnt allow the BB to do its job properly. even if you fill a canister with LR it will still produce nitrite, unless regularly cleaned. sometimes twice or more times a week is nessisary*

internal filters are a bit more annoying. there isnt much info on running an internal in a SW aquarium. i think is because by the time an aquarist wants to keep marines, they normally have done away with internals in favour of more 'advanced' forms of filtration, ie. canisters and sumps. so they use their existing equipment and modify it to fit the needs of SW. even though the main form of filtration in marine is as basic as it gets. using live rock and water movement. ironic really...

so i cant say for definate why, or even if they become nitrite factories. i imagine that its going to be the same story as a canister, but maybe to a lesser degree. as long as there is a cleaning routine.

ive run a fluval 4+ internal on my sw aquarium since it was classed as marine 6 months ago, as it was brackish for quite a while before. ive had no problems that seem out of the ordinary for new SW aquariums. a bit of algae, diatoms ect, but thats expected, and its all calming down now.

maybe when i set up my sump/refugium i'll be able to see the bigger picture but up to now im not sure. i think BigGourami runs a smaller fuval on one of his nano tanks. a 2+ i think, he's been doing this a lot longer than i have. so we had better just see what he says about internals in SW.

and id leave your HOB's on your tank. they'll be fine.

ive thought about making the skimmer using a bottle. but id use a powerhead instead of the air pump. id set the powerhead upside down in the sump and it would be just under the surface sucking in air. everytime ive done this i get loads of tiny bubbles. i think it produces more and smaller bubbles than the venturi principal, but with a hell of a lot more noise too. id have to run it when i was at work. heres a pic to show what i mean.

an heres something funny for you.my mate came in to mine yesterday and didnt believe me that my Green Spotted Puffer had a hell of a bite. he let it bite him. he wont be doing that again soon :grinno:
