im told canister filters become nitrite factories because the water moves too quickly over the media in the canister, which doesnt allow the BB to do its job properly. even if you fill a canister with LR it will still produce nitrite, unless regularly cleaned. sometimes twice or more times a week is nessisary*

internal filters are a bit more annoying. there isnt much info on running an internal in a SW aquarium. i think is because by the time an aquarist wants to keep marines, they normally have done away with internals in favour of more 'advanced' forms of filtration, ie. canisters and sumps. so they use their existing equipment and modify it to fit the needs of SW. even though the main form of filtration in marine is as basic as it gets. using live rock and water movement. ironic really...

so i cant say for definate why, or even if they become nitrite factories. i imagine that its going to be the same story as a canister, but maybe to a lesser degree. as long as there is a cleaning routine.

ive run a fluval 4+ internal on my sw aquarium since it was classed as marine 6 months ago, as it was brackish for quite a while before. ive had no problems that seem out of the ordinary for new SW aquariums. a bit of algae, diatoms ect, but thats expected, and its all calming down now.

maybe when i set up my sump/refugium i'll be able to see the bigger picture but up to now im not sure. i think BigGourami runs a smaller fuval on one of his nano tanks. a 2+ i think, he's been doing this a lot longer than i have. so we had better just see what he says about internals in SW.

and id leave your HOB's on your tank. they'll be fine.
:confused::confused:

I didn't get the first part but the 2nd part was taken in :D

Thanks!

I still use my old HOB filters as a mini-refugeums for my smaller tanks. They are full of LR rubble--a great place for pods to multiply.

good idea...I've been thinking of regugiums too much as spacious areas for macroalgae...

hey guys
i was wondering what kind of corals i can keep in a 6g nano?
its 18w, i havent bought it yet.
but i was going to buy the little nano protien skimmer
and i have extra pumps i can use
also would 2 percula clowns be fine in there?
i also wanted some urchins mabey a dozen blue leg hermits and such
and mabey a bubble anemone?
too much for such a small tank?

I got a tank setup that your describing any fish in there get eaten by the hermits to tight a space. I do 50% changes weekly

It used to have a Fission nano skimmer on it but it just ditched it bc the 10 whisper hob is plently of filtration. Its a 7g bowfront but total water volume is only 4g after rocks and sand.

I keep starburst anemones in there but only bc they are extremely hardy not just kinda hardy i mean so hardy you can tossem against a wall and then bakem in the dry sun for 10 hours and they wont die. I collect them from a local private beach If you want me to send you some i could for 10$ each. Growth rate is about a inch per month max size 10-12inches

message me on my email thedigitaldave@gmail.com if your interested in buying the hardest anemone there is. min 2

be nice, just charge him for postage if he wants one :)

id advise against it though. as an anemone that has the potential to have a dist as big as 25cm in a small tank (less than 10G), seems like a tight squeeze to me. add a few cm for the tenticles is almost a foot.

i got some anemone's from the beach near me. Actinia equina, you wont have them in the states, but you may be able to find something similar. they stay to around 2" and need no light at all. but do require regular feedings.

but remember, anything you collect from the beach can never be returned, as it has the potential to spread disease to native species. and that animals collected must be in QT for a long time as they may contain harmful substances theyre used to in the wild. eg diesel from watercraft.

my anemones where in a uk native marine setup for about 3 months before i even dreamed of putting them into my reef.
