You could pull of 2 if they were a pair, an if you have a really good filter. But if not go with 1.

Sure, throwing two Oscars in too small of a tank can be "pulled off" but isn't the right thing to do. I'd say go with one or maybe none. Get an appropriate sized tank if you want large cichlids.
 
have any of you guys suggesting 2 actually seen a fully grown oscar that was kept in properly sized tanks? They get HUGE. 1 at the most and your gonna need heavy duty filtration .

If you havent bought the tank, buy one to suit the fish, or if you already have the 72 gallon, pick a smaller cihlid. But you could house 1 for awhile I suppose while it was small as a growout tank..
 
I could be wrong but doesn't the Oscar have a similar but smaller growing cousin? I don't know the scientific name but research other Astronotus species...or someone here might know.

IMO too small of a tank for a full grown oscar.
