740 Gallon Plywood tank for Discus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have been following this for a while and I have to say I am impressed ! I knew the build had potential but WOW:WHOA:... love the background and the filtration system is pretty cool also... awesome job! :headbang2

Your attention to detail is amazing! what a huge job you've done and mastered. Your fish are very lucky and will thank you for your awesomeness. :naughty:

"Kaldness"... is this the same as bio-filtration? it looks like its just cut up plastic. Why did you chose Kaldness over bio-balls?

Kaldness are fine plastic rings. Often used in the Koi world.
It has a large surface area, around 800 m2/m3 where bio-balls are around 450 m2/m3. bio-balls are also a bit bigger so the smaller kaldness easier fills the available space behind the background.

The kaldness is slightly lighter than water, so it stays afloat. Because of the water movement by the pump the kaldness is constantly moving keeping the outer biofilm thin, this helps in providing a good aerobic substrate for nitrification. The biofilm in the inner part of the kaldness rings stays thicker and helps with denitrification (which is nice to have with discus because they need quite a lot of food).

And a picture from the surface with some floating plants.
Especially Eichhornia crassipes really is a fast grower. Today I'm going to take a large portion out of the tank.

Tomorrow going for a three week holiday (sadly not being able to watch the soccer final in Holland ). I'm afraid that a large part of the surface will be occupied again when I come back! :irked:

:headbang2We're not worthy!

Amazing tank! I hope one day to build a tank when I own my own home. If I have a fraction of the talent you do ill be happy!

Well you've sold me on Kalness! Three weeks with no updates and photos... i can't bear it!
Enjoy the holiday and keep up the ]v[onster work!

awesome build I like all the detail you put into it. I also love the fact that you maximized the tank size to the area available.

Obviously well planned and skillfully executed. Visionary comes to mind, you are obviously in the upper echelon of the craft, much respect.
