so until i get some nylon sponges to collect bioload in my filter i can just run it w/o and the lava will act as the sponges until i get some? and should i use the nozzel or spray bar to dispense filtered water into the tank? which will my africans like more?

with the powerhead you have in u'r tank yes the rock will get enough flow to grow a nice culture or bb.

i have maybe 80lb of lavarock in my cichlid tank and i often think that its doing more for my biofilter then the xp3...

also remember there are alot of ciltures that live in your sand/gravle as well as the rocks. so if you ever change them you will start a mini cycle, and posably stress your fish.

most likely i won't be changing my substrate cuz it was a massive pain getting all that sand cleaned and into the tank. =p and i might add more lava, but i won't be taking any out. i think that the ones i have in my tank right now look pretty awesome if i do say so myself. 0=)

i also got nylon scrubbies into my filter. i'm filling up my tank tomorrow. i used 9 total scrubbies in my xP3 (3 in each basket that required them). i think that my tank is going to look really awesome when i get my fish moved into it! 0=)

that's all that matters...u like the looks, well that and the fish health...if u can't look at it what's the point?

lol. i thought it would look ugly putting in caves, so i didn't bother. i hope that my cichlids can survive without them. =] i decided on using the nozzel instead of the spray bar and have guppies in the tank swimming around. i also have a few handfulls of gravel in a cup right under the suction part of the filter to help the filter get seeded. =] i think it looks really nice, but its a bit cloudy. hopefully that will clear up once the tank finished cycling?

you can always take two larger pieces of lava rock and lean them together to kind of simulate a cave. it's still pretty open so you can see the fish, doesn't look too bad cosmetics wise, and u'r fish will apreciate it.
