75 Gallon Cichlid Stocking

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats way tooooooooo much to spend on driftwood. You can go down to the river and find nicer peices. But right now in my 75 i have a pair of grammodes cichlids and it will be their home for a while. For a 75 you can do alot of different things like, midas, red isletas pair, most of the parachromis species, some vejas, cubans, and if you like africans you could do buttikoferi cichlid, or a pair of paratilapia pollini which im gonna try in the future.

I know it was too much haha, but the tank was only $75 brand new ($1 per gallon), and it (the wood) was an xmas present to myself.

In terms of cichlids I'm interested in that are "lifers" in the 75, here are some of them...

-Oscar
-Midas (I'd want a tall body, not a labiatus)
-Butti (though I've seen some huge ones that I'd wonder about in a 75)
-A few of the pachromis (Freddies mostly, I know a male jag won't work)
-Zonatum? (unsure about if it's feasible)
-Red isletas (never seen them until you just mentioned them)

Would you be able to tell me the general behavior of these guys also? Like owner responsiveness, glass banger, shy, etc.

Well i have kept 2 of those, oscars an midas. Oscars are sick but they poop a lot! That's the only bad part, but they are fun. They are like dogs in the water. Midas are my favorite, in a 75 you will probably have to keep it solo, they can be crazy glass bangers, my 10" male is super chill, he let's me pet him. But he hates tank mates. Either one is perfect in a 75. Maybe even squeeze 2 oscars in a 75 with heavy filtration.

I have kept all fish but the red isletas but i know a kid with one. All the fish i mentioned to you are great solo fish. The grammodes are very shy and you need to gain their trust which is why im into them as mine are becoming more interactive with me. You can never go wrong with a midas or a freddy. The midas and red isletas are both amphs so they will be very owner responsive. The butti will be a tank and better choice over the oscar. The zonatum is a fish i have researched alot but there are people on here who can give you better info since i never had one. Another option would be pike cichlids as they all have alot of attitude. My choices would be

grammodes pair
midas
red isletas(solo or pair)

Ugh you just made my choice that much more difficult... I'm not a huge grammode person (yet), but have really become fond of amphs, zonatum, and buttis...

Just emailed Rapps about his Red isletas (4-5") that he has for sale, and am thinking about ordering some midas as well (has the midas at 1.5")... We shall see! Can't find anyone selling zonatum though
