75 gallon help!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh thats a great tip thanks a bunch! I can get all of those from zimmermans! I also just found a bullhead catfish that peaks my interest. A spotted bullhead catfish? Any idea where I could get one of those beauties? Does zimmerman take requests?

An all natives tank would be cool. I wanna do another one this summer.

Just FYI, a warmouth, shadow bass and rock bass are all basically the same thing. Even experts have a very hard time telling them apart, they're diagnosed as much by where they're from as by morphological traits.

Im not sure what experts your talking about, but theres a huge difference between the Warmouth and Rockbass in Morphology and temperament. Rockbass are almost as aggressive as Green sunfish and can get 16inches long , whereas Warmouth can be aggressive in mating season but they still are not near as aggressive as the Rockbass. Rockbass can change their colors with their surroundings and Warmouth have the ability to live in waters with low amounts of dissolved oxygen for periods of time, to the trained eye they even look much different with most warmouth having a "war paint" pattern radiating off the mouth towards the body and rockbass having big dark patterns across mid body, they both can have red eyes when mating is the one thing in common. I understand what youre saying. I'm beginning to LIGHTLY ;) consider going with a full native tank ;) maybe bring in a - Warmouth, Shadow Bass, Rock Bass, Mo Longear, Central Longear, and dithers?

That sounds good, I would just leave out the Rock bass due to its size and aggressiveness; the centrallongear has many subspecies, the Mo longear is one of them, the Mississipi embayment (oxbow) longear is another Zimmermans sells some that are from the Ohio river valley that are neat but you wouldn't need to stock more than one subspecies unless you wanted to. Dithers are fast fish that keep aggressive fish from hopefully killing each other, I have used Crescent shiners in the past with Orangespotted sunfish and Ive heard of people using Common shiners and Golden shiners with bigger and more aggressive sunnies like Greens and Bluegill. The true spotted Bullhead is a rare fish and hard to find, when you do find them (on aquabid) they are usually expensive....what many people or lfs's sell as spotted Bullheads are actually young brown Bullheads who keep a spotted pattern sometimes for several years. Heres some more info on Sunnies ;) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lepomis

I've heard that bullheads are one of those fish that will grow into a tank and stop? If I got a spotted brown or a yellow bullhead do you think it would stop around 12"? What about southern redbelly dace? Would they be good dither fish? Like... 6 or so of them? 8? What's your diagnosis doc :D
I do love all of the subspecies of longears btw. I think they're the most colorful fish out there. Would my dithers be in danger of the bullhead sneak attacking them?

Mo Longear, Central Longear, Mississippi Embayment Longear, Warmouth, (Shadow Bass - I never see it available???), ?? Bullhead x2 ??, dithers???? ---- thats where I'm standing right now. I just got some of the most beautiful pieces of driftwood I have ever seen for decorations. I mean these things are gorgeous. Super excited and think they will offer tons of hiding places and different territories for the fish :)

I stand corrected. I rechecked my source, I was confusing the three rock bass subspecies with warmouths and shadow basses.

Doc? LOL, only in my handwriting :) ; Yes although SRBD's are beautifull fish, they are narrow and don't get over 3 inches long, which would be just too much of a snack for any Bullhead or big mouthed Warmouth to pass up . I never had Bullheads long enough to know if they would stunt and be healthy in a tank the size of a 75g. I have owned Stonecats which are just large madtoms....those and other large madtoms (over 5 inches) like the Slender, Checkered and margined madtoms would work well with your Sunnies or the rare and usually expensive Spotted or Snail Bullheads (Ameiurus serracanthus,Ameiurus brunneus); I wholeheartedly agree with you, although Ive kept a lot of fish but I also think the native Longeared sunnies are the most colorful and beautifull looking species you can find anywhere in the world.

It seems that I'm a bit late to the party, but I've tried something like this before. I used to keep a warmouth, green terror, and a hybrid cichlid (mayan x ???) together with a collection of upper-jaw bichirs. I didn't have any aggression issues until the cichlids reached maturity around 5-6". The warmouth sometimes liked to make sham attacks on my GT. Then my GT would "fight" with the warmouth by charging at it with its gills flared. The warmouth would then turn perpendicular to the GT and wiggle, showing its size. This mostly just confused the GT and she backed off. This went on for several months with no damage. However, once the hybrid grew a pair he decided to chase the warmouth relentlessly. Once I saw missing scales I had to separate them, and I eventually gave the warmouth away to someone on MFK.

However, it should be noted that this hybrid has quite the attitude problem. A few months ago I was keeping him and the GT in a divided 55, he unfortunately broke down the divider and killed the GT while I was at work. I will never keep him with any fish of any kind again. He's also the only one who ever showed interest in bothering a black ghost knife that I kept with him when he was a juvenile. And I even saw him peck at the bichirs a bit, which have always been ignored by all the other fish they were kept with; including the warmouth and a variety of other cichlids.

I hope this story helps you come to a decision. It's a bit of a toss-up as to whether your situation will work, but if you're dealing with younger fish it shouldn't be too much on an issue...for now.

Sounds like you had a jaguar / dovii hybrid there. The most relentlessly aggressive fish out there. Never plan on keeping a jag or a dovii let alone a hybrid unless theyre alone ;) They will hunt down and kill everything no matter how big your tank is lol. Yeah that just confirms my suspicions about mixing CA/SA cichlids with sunfish. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go all natives ^.^ They have just swept me off of my feet!
Alright now Doc ;) no dithers then. Which is A-OK by me. (Waste of $$$ in my opinion). What about overstocking. If I'm running two 2217 Eheim Canister filters on 3 subspecies of longears, shadow bass, warmouth, and I'm gonna be looking for 2 snail or spotted bullheads. Is that too much??? I will be doing 25% changes twice a week :)

It's definitely neither one of those. I'd have to guess it has the genes of something like a texas or robertsoni. There's a notable amount of blue pearls on a typical mayan background pattern.
