75 gallon planted tank journal.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My lucky bamboo are right next to a window so that might have something to do with the growth.

I had just been thinking back to all of the changes I had made to my tank and I remembered that I once had hang on back filters on the side of my tank before and it got me to thinking. Instead of just having the diy filter holding plants across the back of the tank why not put some an emperor 400 or some other large hob filter on each side of my tank thus increasing the room I have to put plants? Since I’m using polycarbonate instead of acrylic or glass I can easily cut it to fit around all of the tubing, plants sticking out, and whatnot so putting a hob on each side won’t be hard.
The hob would be empty as to maximize the space for plants with my canisters being the filtration.
Does anyone see a problem with the hobs not being used for filtration and the canisters being the sole filtration? I’m putting an fx6 on it along with others.

Update time.
I got two new plants in the mail with one of them being in the original plan and the other being an addition. I’m expecting another plant in the mail soon so I’ll give another update when it comes.
Anyway I got an umbrella papyrus and another purple plant that I can’t remember the name of.

Umbrella payrus on the left, arrowhead plant and two purple plants I can’t remember the name of in the middle, and 2 pieces of lotus bamboo on the right that broke off when I first got it.
They weren’t doing too well in the tank since there is not much light so I took them out and put them in these cups and will put them near the window.

The lotus bamboo isn’t doing too well either so I am going to have to wait to finish the step at hand and skip to the next step which is building the diy hanging lights with stand. I still have to figure out what lights I’ll use...

My pothos is sending out new leaves which is off setting the leaves that have died from the shock of going from dirt to water which is nice.

Well it’s time for an update, been meaning to do it the last few days but didn’t get around to taking the pictures until now.
First off I would like to say that if you’re going to try something always expect for something to go wrong. For me I prepared myself to lose half of the plants I got, I didn’t lose half but I did lose some. Anyway I’ll list out what I’ve lost so far.
The umbrella papyrus
The purple mystery plant
Another purple plant I didn’t mention but will show a picture from google later today
1 arrow head plant
I also have this little bush plant that is half dead and I’m not sure if he’s gonna live or not.

I got this grassy plant that is doing ok, a dozen or so leaves died but new leaves are forming so I’m taking it as a win for now.

My pothos had a lot of leaves die but it also has a lot of new leaves forming so I’m not worried about it.

Picture time!

Looks like you’re only allowed to post 20 pictures per post, I have 1 more.

This is showing the tip of a leaf on the lotus bamboo that was just burned to death basically by being too close to the light.

This is the other purple plant that I ended up losing

^ you forgot a FTS :p

But your plants look like they are doing okay...

The area surrounding the tank is a mess so yall will get a full tank shot later.
Yeah, right now all of the plants except the pothos were boight with the mindset “if they live then good and if they die then that’s ok”. I didn’t intend to seriously attempt to keep any plants until I got my bookcase project thingy done so I could hang proper lighting and give them what they need.
Oh that reminds me, I made a temporary solution for how to hang the lights, I’ll show a picture when I get back home.

Trial and error. I feel like that’s how it goes anytime plants are added. Lol

Eh I probably could have kept at least one of them from dying if I had cared about them lol. What I find odd is that 1 arrowhead plant died while the other 2 lived. I think it was because the aquaclear 70 was too crowded for them and the 2 strongest ones lived.
Until I get my project finished it’s more or less survival of the fittest for the plants. Except for the pothos, that’s several years of growth that I can’t waste.
