75 gallon stock?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Growing out a group of 10 sevs from 2-4", and they are really hard on each other, even in a 4 foot tank. You can see the territorial nips and constant lip locking.

Obviously experiences differ but I️ have a gold, rotkiel, red spot and orange shoulder all 7” +. They don’t bother with each other at all- sometimes they hover like discuss together.

Well every fish is different, but the sevs I had always picked fights with my other fish....some they couldn't win.
You won’t find me arguing that every fish is different at all. I think what kept my severums in check was the fact that they weren’t the top dogs of the tank.

It’s definately possible- and I can only speak to my own experiences.

My top dog is a brasiliensis- but my sevs are all male and in a 6 ft tank.

This topic and discussion is what makes this hobby and forum Great.

There’s really no hard/fast rules for any fish and results will differ.

I like that this topic is about a realistic sized tank- and no one is doing the typical BS- “ you need a 300gal” tank blah blah blah... which makes sense large cichla species, dovii and umbee. Most of those topics and convos hurt the hobby and create barriers to entry.

Typical BS is typically a response to typical ignorance. Typically speaking, after reading a few hundred of those kinds of threads it becomes obvious that the vast majority of those asking are only seeking approval on a minimum tank size, not an informed response based on actual hands on experience. A good reality check doesn't hurt anyone, and may result in saving some fish a (shortened) life full of stress. If that creates a barrier to entry, good.

Having said that personlly I would remove the festivum, chances are it won't hold up to the aggression as the rest of its tank mates mature. Ditto to the angel.

I’ll agree with the Angels for sure, I’ve only got one angel anymore and about the only time they were bad was when they were spawning. They could actually get pretty nasty when they turned sideways and tried to charge some of the other guys. I moved the spawning pair to another tank and lost both, I believe stress was the cause of that.

The angel in this tank was never supposed to be in there. He was removed from my other 75g where he was with another angel. These 2 were fighting and I removed the dominate one into this tank. As of right now the angel is not bullied and doesn't bully anyone. I know this will probably change and he may have to be re homed. So I admit it was a mistake trying to keep 2 unsexed angels in a 75g. Not saying it cant ever work but its not working with my 2. I will not attempt it again in the future.

If the festivum cant hang in the future I will try him in the other 75g where the dominate fish is the other angel. He seems fine at this time and is my fastest growing fish right now.

The blue acara is around 3" and is the boss. He seems to dislike the festivum the most. He will charge and the festivum will swim out of the way and its over. The acara spends most of his time under one of the slate caves/bridges I have made. With the festivum at the top for the most part, these 2 only interact when I approach the tank and the acara comes out.

The rotkeil is about 1-1.25" and hides all the time. The acara ignores him and he never goes near the slate caves so all is good. He seems to favor plants.

The pleco is not fazed by the acara and the acara has given up trying to push him around.

The diamond tetras only bother each other and are ignored by the rest of the fish. They are full grown and I have 5 males and 4 females. Started with 10 but lost one early on about a year ago.

The sajica is very small. His body might be 3/4" maybe 1" total with tail. He is allowed into the caves right next to the acara.

I am here to learn from others experience. These are the tanks and fish I have at this time. Im glad I found the site so in the future I can get opinions and advice before any other fish are acquired. Or how best to handle the problems I run into with my tanks.

I hope to build a new house in 3 to 4 years. When this happens I will be getting a 200+g tank so will need help in doing everything right from the ground up.

Reality is what it is!

How do you post pictures from a cell phone?

Do you think the acara is easy on the small sajica and severum because he sees them as no threat?
