So I have a 75 gallon aquarium with a 14 inch pleco in it. Basically what I'm wanting is to stock the tank with maybe 2 or 3 big fish, and then the rest small fish. Any suggestions? I love the look of huge fish but I understand that im limited by only having 75 gallons. So as big as possible for the big ones, and then on the small ones, I dont care, just need suggestions.

Popular choice for this size range is cichlids. 2 or 3 of the 6"-16" Central/South american species will do well, just watch out for species that get too big (Like Jaguars) and interspecies aggression/territory "issues." I have an old 75g that I'd love to set up with a RTM or two. I'm a bit of a biotope nut, so I'd probably fill it in with swordtails or mexican tetras (I need to do a little research on what lives with RTMs). But there are many many other species that would do very nicely in a 75g. I feel like 75g is a sort of sweet spot of easy to manage tank size and interesting stocking options.

btw a neat tool is http://aqadvisor.com/. Put in your tank size and filter, and select different species you're considering. It will spit out size, compatability, aggression, and equipment issues. Just take its advice with a grain of salt.

I recently finished cycling my 75g which will soon to be home to some RTM juvies. I plan to grow out 6-8 RTMs and keep the best pair. Along with them I plan to keep a school of around 10 tetras.

At 75 gallon one can keep a pair of any south american cichlid like red devil, midas etc. One can also experiment with two 10-12 inch different type same size south american or african cichlid with a pleco.

Pretty much. You could probably do more than a pair if you go with something small (firemouth, for instance), providing you have lots of hiding spots and good filtration. With cichlids its a bit wishy washy as far as "rules" go, because it really comes down to individual fish personalities. Some are less agressive/territorial than others, even within the same species.

a pair of small cichlids (firemouth, blue acara, etc) and a school of large tetras (buenos aires, mexican, etc)...if you want a pair of bigger cichlds, go with more passive stuff like larger geos, staying away from Parachromis or things that get too large and aggressive. Also, the pleco might have to go

Actually I am going to get rid of the pleco... I had never had one that large before, but he's destroying my tank. I've got a sand substrate and ever since I put him in there, the water is cloudy as all heck because he moves his rear fin back and forth swishing it all over the place... It's driving me mad.

You nned a 120 gal to have a pair of large American cichlids. You could fit one 10-14 inch cichlid though.
