Is it actually proven than oscars are somehow less intelligent? The midas cichlids I've had have been rather dull, not in any way particularly intelliegent compared to oscars for example. Also, Midas also take up a big part of the bioload....this stuff is as much your opinion as that of the guy who prefers oscars over midas. I've had both, and have found Midas to be much less interesting than oscars in terms of personality, appearance, etc but that's just my personal opinion.
I love Oscars!

I ended up going with a Jack Dempsey and (temporarily) a black shark (labeo)... Any suggestions on small tank mates? My LFS suggest Filamentosa barbs.

Don't know about jd's specificaly, but I've had great luck with a school of black skirt tetras with my firemouths. They completely ignore them, and the skirts school around the tank constantly. I've also done tiger barbs well, but they can get nippy. Not bad though. Always wanted to try emporer tetras but they get a bit large

aqadvisor.com says that the JD will kill the black skirt tetras... I think I might go with the filamentosa's, they seem to be the best option so far. The only problem is that aqadvisor doesn't list the black shark so I'm not sure what the compatability is with him.

anyone know of a fish close enough to the black shark so that I can put it in on the advisor?

JDs are pretty cool. You could put 2 in there. Just be careful and watch out for aggression.

Just DO NOT put 2 males together. You should vent it before you get a other JD. you could do a pair. Or 2 females.

if the JD is aggressive ANY small tankmates will be toast.when the JD gets about 5in. you will know. an option might be a couple of cons or other small TOUGH cental am. cichlids
