I have two clowns in with my africans with plently of hiding spots and have yet to have a problem. On the other hand the dominant african DOES NOT like a brown ghost knife being in there requiring a recent move.

I'd be worried about the PH difference. Clown loaches are South-American with a preference for low ph, while African cichlid are (obviously) African and like high ph.

I would have to agree with that thought. I personally dont provide IDEAL conditions but instead run middle of the road on ph. Either way it works for me.

as do i have not run into any problems yet

Clown loaches will be ok with african cichlids. I suggest to buy at least four of them. They like to school. My biggest suggestion is to acclimate the fish slowly to your water perimeters. Especially to the higher ph levels.

Clown Loaches are not South American. They are from Sumatra and Borneo. You are right about the ph though.

Chances are that the africans are not wild caught and are used to whatever water they were raised in. I would worry more about giving them a consistent PH than messing with it at all.

But how many people actually mix RO water with thier tap to soften their water for Clown Loaches? Not hardly any, I'll bet. Most people just use their tap water for all their fish, whatever it is. And the fish adjust. I've got super hard water and my Clown Loaches grown like crazy. And so do the Discus and Angels in the other tanks.
