Daughter got a 75g for her big xmas present this year. She's got 2 runty oscars that she got from petsmart a month ago in a 20g currently. They were basically buy 1 get 1 for less than 5$, about 1" when she got them with caved in bellies and tbh I thought they would die. She's done well taking care of them and theyve fattened up pretty well I'd say, maybe 2-2.5" now and full round(er) bellies. She's going to grow them out some more yet before deciding which one she wants to keep and one will move in to the 75g and the other will be finding a new home.

So now she's at a point where she wants to get other fish to raise with it as well, as far as tank mates go. She really likes featherfin cats, so would like to get 2-3 of those. She really likes jack dempseys and GT's as well as thor maculipinnis but told her 1 of those would probably max. Possibly a EB acara as well.

When the Oscar gets too big for her tank, in a couple of years, I'll likely move it in to my 125 if I haven't upgraded to a 200+ by that time.

I handle all the water changes and all the tanks in the house get a 25-50% change twice a week and her 75g has a ac110 + eheim classic 2217 on it.

I feel like the combo would work, I've kept GT's in the past and not overly concerned about their aggresion. JD's I have heard are hit/miss and I've heard some horror stories on the maculipinnis, but on the other hand I've heard stories where they arent aggressive at all. End of the day, a cichlid is a cichlid and each one has their own temperament. The above stocking is likely what I'll be doing for her, but I just wanted to bounce off the forum soundboard for any other potential stockings that I could see about interesting her in. She was really disappointed when she found out that the bichirs she liked just got too big for her 75g, so at this point I'm just trying to help her find a few new selections. (the ones I listed above are things she liked after we looked at rapps stock list + aquascapes + a few others)

Thanks for any extra input on stock ideas.

Here's a video of them in their current home doing well with tetras and corys and a lone guppy that I evidently survived as a fry months ago.

Hello!
Golden or red severums if she likes them, I suggest.

Thanks for the suggestion! I had thought the same thing for her, but she wanted something with different colors, as in her mind, the gold or gold/red spot sevs look too similar to her oscars.

Hi, how about Heros efasciatus" rotkeil" or Vieja synspila?Or a nice chocolate cichlid...if you can integrate them in your 200 g later too.

The 200g is 2 yrs out, after wife finishes her NP license and we relocate out of state. How long do Viejas take to grow and how is their aggression? We had talked about chocolates as well but she prefs a jd/gt over a choc. We'd looked at Viejas before but I don't know anything of them. She likes them.

Sounds like a lot of cichlids for a 75 to me. Oscars and green terrors grow fast too. The feather finds should work as long as the cichlids don't get nippy with them. Ruby red barbs, roseline barbs, exodon tetra, senegal bichir, black ghost knife, snails, red tail shark, fancy plecos could all be options. Or food...

Hello, I know two guys keeping Vieja synspila and they grow pretty quick till they reach about 6 or 7 inches.
They max out at about 14 inch (males) usually.
The level of aggression differs.
One buddy's fish are very calm and the other ones the exact opposite.
Commonly they are described as not very aggressive for cichlids of that size.
The Oscar(s) grow as quick as the Viejas, ore even quicker. One year olds measure 8 inches.
When young cichlids grow up together they get used to each other often and don't get very aggressive on their tankmates.Just if there are no mating pairs in the tank of course.
Two years are a long time, I think.

Thise oscars wont need two years to outgrow that tank. They grow fast. Cool getting the kids involved in this great hobby.

I know the dilemma that goes with kids and properly stocking a tank. My son constantly wants new fish. I make him choose on who gets rehomed if e get a new one. He wanted vieja's so he chose to rehome our overly aggressive oscar.

Hes 4 yrs old lol

I got my syn at about 4" 18 months ago and now it's pushing 12". It will have stand offs with my sevs but nothing serious. I have a bellycrawler that's pushing 10" that intimidates the syn due to its speed despite the syn having significant more girth.

I have vieja argentea that are about 3ish inches that i was planning on adding to the main tankand after seeing their aggression nix'd that idea. Oscars arent on the same level of aggression. Acara's go well with oscars see if she likes yellow acara (aequidens metae) mine is in with really dark decor so google some images for her their colors are different with a lighter substrate and backround
