75g stocking

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow I didn't phrase that correctly...yes, I meant all one gender if I can determine their gender. Would those fish have the capability of succeeding together? I understand even the best stocking can go sour.

I've been in the hobby for 3 years. Not a lot of experience in comparison to the majority of the site. I personally ask too many questions and am typically unsure of myself which is why I have a bombardment of questions. I don't plan on changing the stock as I don't like getting a setup simply to change it. I don't think it's fair to the fish, and I pretty much want to keep what I got regardless, barring any incidents.
Being in the hobby only 3 years, asking lots of question is one of the best things you can do. I know its hard to sift thru, and be sure about whether the advice you take, comes from an accurate source, but there are many good sources here on MFK, and if you look, the reputations are very solid. There are also people who have only been in the hobby 3 or 5 years who think they are experienced, though time is not always a barometer, it counts.
I started keeping cichlids in the late 1950s and still have many questions, and have made many, many mistakes.
Much of what I reply to threads comes from those many mistakes, and their resolutions good or bad.
Fish keeping also lead me to a 20+ year career in water treatment chemistry and microbiology, which has helped my understanding of the invisible part of fish keeping immensely.

only one stupid question that ever existed.....

.....the question that was never asked

This is probably the idea I've been the most sold on so far: Pair of Thoricthys-something. I can't make up my mind on what looks best. Then have a group of livebearers with them, making it a nice combo of CA fish.

You could do a group of thorichthys, 6 to 8 would be a good number for your tank with some livebearers.
They work best in groups.

Oh boy yours are very nice. What type of Thorichthys are yours? They would work well as a breeding colony having multiple pairs?

Thanks,
They are thorichthys helleri.
There are about 10 species of thorichthys available including the old favourite Meeki/firemouth.
They will breed in pairs only a few inches apart from each other. There is lots of Gill flaring and displaying to one another but rarely any serious aggression.
Thorichthys maculipinnis is about the most aggressive of the group.

Sounds very exciting and interactive. Will they be a danger to the live bearers? I probably would like to keep the stock lighter so I have space in the bioload for the fry. Do you think getting 6-8, see what comes out of that, and then maybe a handful of live bearers?
