It looks like the cage should do the trick! The water level depends on the design of the sump too, if I go for a similar design to yours with mostly submerged media (still waiting on a price for the pond matrix) then a higher water level will be ok. I was planning on trying to run a trickle tower, but with the low height coming out of the tank there just isn't enough vertical fall to do it unless its run off a seperate pump in the sump. I already have about 40L of bioballs and ~20kg of cheap ceramic noodles, but its probably money well spent investing in some quality media like Matrix...

Right, any more questions and I'll make my own thread!

Thanks for the kudos. I've got some work to do before I can even hold a candle to your setups.

10 micron? Damn! I bet it's crispy. I have some 25 micron socks...they last me about 4 to 5 days before they get clogged, so I jumped up 100 (I'm too lazy to clean them out every 5 days)

I don't think I ever acknowledged my source, but I based my sump on your design (running the submerged media in the laundry bags). People can freak out all day long about those bio-balls being submerged in my sump...I'll just point to the scoreboard: 0, 0, 10. lol

Ha my stuff? Thanks for the mention but it's not even close to the scale of this beast!

But I know what you mean about keyboard warriors. I had one guy say my sumps were crap and I would need to provide video proof of my sumps running an ink/dye test to show that the water properly flowed through the media. I'm like WTF are you serious? Is it not enough to show that my parameters are perfect and the fish are healthy? :headbang2

Actually I lie! One more question, where do you find the charts for the Laguna pumps showing how much water they pump at X head height? I've seen you quote figures in other threads too, but have looked on their site and they don't show the graph with the pumps.

From what I have seen on the following site, Laguna is coming out with a few new models that are even more efficient. They have them labeled as "Next Generation": http://www.azponds.com/New_webpages/New_subpumps_Classic.html

Unforunately, I haven't been able to find a flow chart for the "Next Generation" models.

The flow chart for the old models can be found here (in case that doesn't work, below is a screen shot): http://www.azponds.com/laguna_maxflo_chart.htm

For the life of me, I couldn't find it on Laguna's site...weird?

Anyways, ask away man...if I didn't like talking about this stuff I wouldn't be on here.

ink test? That's too funny man. Tell you what, while you're at it, throw a quart of motor oil in there to see how well your overflows are skimming the surface of the water.

What a knucklehead. :grinno:

Awesome, thanks! Yeah crazy they don't have it on their website. Is that AZponds website where you got yours? I might have to look at ordering mine as they're crazy expensive over here, and often hard to get new/XL models.

I often think we get carried away with bio filtration on big tanks, at the end of the day if your water is good and your fish are healthy its doing its job! You only have ~3 times turn over based on 2100gph at 9' head, and you tank isn't what I'd call lightly stocked, yet your water is crystal clear and clean. If I can keep my head height around a metre I think I could probably get away with the 2900, giving ~3000gph at 3.5' for around 450g of water.

some great ideas here

Actually, re-reading that table of flow rates there is a typo for the 2900, unless 3' head is the sweet spot that gives it an extra 800gph over 2'....

Still, 2550gph at 3' head seems plenty for a ~450g tank. Thanks for posting them, I'll put up my own thread with the sump design shortly.

I actually got mine through Amazon.com.

In regards to my stocking levels, I think I got a little carried away. I have been thinking about swapping the (12) Rasbora for a Pink Tail Chalceus...especially after seeing a huge Tiger Oscar a few days ago ...the Rasbora might be too small to keep with a big O.

Good catch. That definitely looks like a typo. You could try reaching out to Laguna directly...they should be able to provide you with some accurate numbers.

Looking forward to seeing your build.

Honestly, I think it's a poorly designed sump. It works for you because you're way understocked and the sump is so huge. But if you had a couple monster sized fish or were moderately stocked, there wouldn't be enough circulation in the sump to make enough bio to keep up with the ammonia/nitrite. It's not technically a wet dry sump because all your media is wet and below the water line.
