770 Gallon Monster Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
At least he takes time to care about the fish and giving them a comfortable home. Not like someone who would cram a niger catfish in a 450 gallon aquarium just so they can pat themselves on the back for having a big monster fish.

I ate the niger cat last night, I agree, it was getting to big. Your correct, my third wife just told me that I don't care about anything but myself....... it was her catfish........

To the OP you have an awesome set up sorry about the derail. I dream about a tank like yours.

Alfonso, sorry I haven't been around the forum lately. Slowed down on the hobby a bit lately. Just a 20 gallon up and running at the moment. But look at you doing BIG things. lol The tank is awesome man. Congrats. I have to check it out in person one of these days.

What's up man. Yeah, I'm on here in burts...either checking out all the latest posts, or just over it and not even bothering to look at anything for months at a time. You're welcome to stop by and check it out anytime. I'll have a BBQ soon, so that you get a meal out of it and you're not driving out here just to see some goldfish. haha

Haha, hopefully Lupin sees this thread so he can lust over the goldfish.

My wife says that you made a smart choice in your stocklist. :grinno:

haha- It sounds like your wife is the brains of the operation. Will she let you get a monster tank if you promise to keep goldfish?

Any fish is capable of being a feeder. What makes a 12" ca/sa cichlid or a 2ft arowana so much "tougher"? Either one will get destroyed in a matter of seconds by a larger fish :)

So true. There's always something bigger and badder out there. Machismo in the fish game cracks me up.

I think there are certain fish that belong in ponds and some of these monster cats fall into that category. It kills me to see my LFS with a new shipment of cute little 2" red tail cats every week. I can almost guarantee a 99% mortality rate within the first year, but it's all about making money. "Ten gallon tank? no problem...it'll only grow to the size of it's environment." :screwy:

lol- you love tellin' people you ate (or are going to eat) your fish. We get it...you are an apex predator. :clap

 wait a minute, as I looked at the room you tank is located in, how in God's name did you get that tank in through that door way? Or, are there double doors on the opposite ends of the building?

Here's a (horrible quality) video for all the goldfish fans.

Sweet! Some shubunkins would look great in there too. We have two in our koi pond. Had them for several years now, and I'd say they're between 8-10"

the luckiest goldfish ever
...until I throw a giant snakehead in there. :headbang2 Just kidding.

That's what had me worried if I ever have to try to sell this tank...it won't fit through most doors. I've seen huge tanks sit for sale at pretty good prices for a long time. I saw a 600G pentagon tank (this thing was awesome) on craigslist for about 2 years. Initial asking price was pretty high at around $6,000 and the last I saw it was down to $900 a year later!...I think the main issue was that no one could fit it through their doorway. Anyways, to answer your question, there was initially a wall in the middle of the fish room (the guy had a finished office on the left side and an unfinished workshop on the right). The door to the office side is a standard 30", but the workshop side has double doors (48" opening).

Here's the pic of the 600G that I was not able to buy at the time because I was living in a little apartment (not me in the pic...that was the dude selling it). How cool would a giant gourami look in there!

I've thought about adding a few...I think I'm going to wait a few weeks to add anymore fish to let the bio really get established. I've never been a big fan of Shubunkins...there's something about the black markings that make them look like they are covered in dirt. I prefer solid or two tone colors versus calico, but it might be a nice addition to mix things up.

What did you paint the floor of your fish tank room with? Is that epoxy paint? It looks great! Very quiet filtration. Looking/Sounding good!

Two coats of Rustoleum Epoxy Shield and one thick application of their clear coat. I spent over 20 hours prepping the concrete, so I'm glad someone noticed. So far the epoxy is holding up really well. There's no way I would spend the time prepping the garage floor for this stuff...since the fish room is nice and finished I wanted the floors to look half decent so I went for it. I only wish I hadn't used the speckles...they hide imperfections in the floor, but it gives it a little bit of a cheesy/fake granite look.

In regards to the noise, the mic on my little digitial camera doesn't really pick it up, but the pump has a pretty loud hum to it. I had heard people say that the Hammerhead Gold was silent, but this pump is nowhere near that. I'm still happy with it though, considering the amount of water it pushes and the low watts it draws. Skinning the stand will definitely dampen the hum, as will getting some throw rugs in the room.

^^^ man Alex I wish I would have gotten that tank for $900. Would be perfect for my 1 in house show tank.

yeah, you have a good point about tanks fitting through the doors. I remember my wife and I debating having french door to our house. I have to admitt I fought the idea tooth and nail about spending the extra money for them, but I am happy she stood her ground, though i would never let her know that.;)
