770 Gallon Monster Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very nice build, it has been a pleasure to read.

I, for one, like the goldfish. A big pond/tank with a nice assortment of goldfish and/or Koi can be pretty spectacular, especially when the livestock grows out a bit. I kept a red capped Oranda for years (this species is not the best goldfish choice for a cold water tank, or so they say) in an unheated tank. He lived to be about ten years old and grew to have a body slightly larger than a softball with a tail fin nearly as long as the body. He was metallic white with a blood red wen; his entire body & wen faded to a metallic platinum when he turned about 7 years old which most people preferred. He didn't mind getting his wen rubbed during feeding and seemed to have the personality of friendly midas. Probably my favorite fish yet.

I've seen large tanks in Japan full of fish this size, and it is pretty cool.

Surprised you picked goldfish though I would have lots of plans for that size tank, luckily I live in the projects with my 150g free water free elect, I can't imagine my bill 3 canister filters a sump and two heaters running 24/7 scared to upgrade though wondering if my floor would collapse

For the love of God, at least throw in some bluegill. A perch maybe.

I thought about it...but the goldfish are actually starting to grow on me. I don't like the look of mixing goldfish with natives...it just looks funny to me.

Thanks. Have any pictures of the Oranda? My LFS had a monster Ryukin (larger than a softball) but I passed on him because he had really cloudy eyes.

Nice tank wish I had room

Thanks.

mate that tank is spectacular but why goldfish you could have anyfish in there you like being that size it must of cost loads of cash wish my tank was that big

No money leftover to pay electric bill to heat this beast in the winter time.

Im having a blast reading all this at work

Thanks.

I know how you feel. I've had concerns about floors not being able to handle the weight of my tanks. I actually had to move my 70G out of my living room a few months ago because the floor was starting to sag. My 770 is on concrete.

You feel lucky? Seriously?

I'll see if I can dig up a picture of the oranda. It was a long time ago, so I'll have to check old hard drive backups.
