770 Gallon Monster Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is downright dope.

Thanks man. Glad you like it.

What are the fish that look like Roseline's? Epic tank man.

Edit: Redfinned Bala's

Yup, the shop had them labeled as Redfinned Balas- their scientific name is Cyclocheilichthys janthochir. They are mellow fish. The most peaceful in the tank, but every so often the two males will square off and do a bunch of posturing and once in a while they will nip at one another. Cool fish...I like them.

Great update Alex I'm glad you found some filaments.

Thanks KNH. I had a dozen Filaments growing out (I ended up biting the bullet and ordering them from WetSpot), but when I came across these guys and I couldn't pass them up.

Looks great. When those silvers grow too large for you send them to me and you can start over with a new set

lol- I kinda get a bad rap for advocating bigger tanks for fish, but I honestly think these wide bars should be in a tank that's at least 4' wide like yours (mine is only 3'). They are crazy fast and when they get spooked or go on one of their short bursts, they need more space to fly. I wish I had gone with a school of spotted Silvers or even Red Hooks that stay a little smaller. These Widebars are getting huge.

It won't look as fancy but if you throw some insulation around the sides and paint it black you will cut costs by alot. You could even make a custom box around it to match the interior of your house

Thanks Radness.

Tanks looks great love the decor looks like Im looking into a river system.. keep up the updates and if you ever wanna sell that tank I'm in the Bay as well....(wishful thinking)...lol

I'll keep you in mind if I'm ever forced to sell; I think that's the only way I'd sell the tank.

I appreciate the tip; thank you. I've thought about insulating the sides, but I like looking down the length of the tank too much. But you are right, I think it would save me a couple bucks a month. The back panel has 1.5" rigid insulation and I have the sump pump well insulated so I think that helps.

It's pretty amazing how much running my air pump cools the water (my heaters run about 20% more when the air pump is going), but I still run it through the winter because I like the added water movement it provides and most importantly oxygenation.

On another note, I had some weird outbreak. A few of my barbs had these white patches that almost looked like a fungus growing on their bodies and fins. I'm pretty sure it was my fault; one of my filter socks clogged up and instead of swapping it out, I was lazy and just valved down that drain so that the sock wouldn't overflow. I had it this way for one week before I got to cleaning the sock. I think the low volume of water running through the sock resulted in a bacteria bloom and my fish got sick as a result (speculating here, but I'm pretty sure that's what happened). In any case, I've been doing 50% water changes and dosing salt at a rate of 1 tablespoon per 5G and it has almost entirely cleared up. I'm shocked at how quickly they have healed up. I can see now why so many people promote salt as a treatment; worked like a charm. Moral of the story, don't slack on tank maintenance. :screwy:

Here's a pic of the sickest of the barbs taken just a few days ago; it's tough to get a pic of these guys because they are Schizophrenic swimmers, always on the move. You can kinda see the white patch on the top of his head and his eye started to cloud up. But he's almost 100% cured now.

Good save and great tip.

Looks amazing! Haven't been on the forum much in a year or more and not surprised this is still a current topic.

And now that I think about it, I remember your the sump thread as well... that was a real page turner too. lol :rip

I'm deciding on some SDs for my 240g growout for my Asian arowana. I was under the impression that Myleus rubriprinnis (red hook SDs) and Myleus schomburgkii (wide bar SDs) grow to about the same size, both growing up to 10". Where did you see that the red hooks are smaller, and what size did you see them growing to? I may go with some Metynnis fasciatus (striped SDs) anyways, but trying to figure out how big they grow is really confusing. Thanks. Great looking tank by the way. I really appreciate the height and can relate when you say you enjoy viewing from the side of the tank.

lol- yeah, who would have thought sumps would be so controversial. Thanks for the kind words.

59 page thread !!! Will have to go back through it. Super tank. Congrats.

I forget how to do it, but there is a way to change the number of posts per page. I made the change a while back so that I wouldn't have to keep clicking the next page on long threads.

Glad you like the tank. It's been a fun adventure. Thanks for the kudos.

I saw your thread on the new 240G. That sounds like a cool setup. I also had trouble finding max sizes for the SD species. I asked ArapaimaG (the guy with the 52k gallon tank) about his Wide Bars Myleus schomburgkii and he said he's had some for 15 years; his are 12-14".

I had a school of Red Hooks Myleus schomburgkii for over two years that got to around 6 to 8". A member on here (Gr8KarmaSF) actually bought them from me and I think he still has them; I'm also be curious to hear how big they've gotten. Hopefully he can chime in. I've had the Widebars for less than 2 years and they are considerably larger than the Red Hooks; around 8 to 10" and much thicker. The schomburgkii are more like mini Pacu.

I think typical max sizes are as follows:
ThinBar Silver Dollar 5-7"
Striped Silver Dollar (I have no idea)
Red Hook Silver Dollar 8-10"
Wide Bar Silver Dollar 12-14"

There's also a strain of Green Silver Dollars that were imported a while back that a couple members still have. Not sure what size they get to, but they look cool.

Here's a pic of my old Red Hooks:

Below is a link to ArapaimaG's thread on his SDs; he shares some good info there.

Looking forward to seeing your new setup. The 1000G for Dummies is insane! :headbang2
