7ft CENTRAL TANK Question....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very often (and I've seen this many times in person) a well crowded cichlid tank seems to be the way forward as everyone and everything becomes a ditherer... only drawback there is the fish won't show off to the best potential as they are all forced to behaviour un-naturally.

I feel containing and controlling the fishes behaviours is the way forward. To understand their psyche  and yes a good idea is to have a cooling off tank incase and also a good local store that'll take your un-controllable fish off your hands.

I personally agree that over crowding in any cichlid tank can have positive effects on reduced agression or better spread out attitudes towards each other due to lack of claimable territory.

I think this is easier to obtain a less aggressive environment when all males are used. Adding the female element especially breeding pairs increases the hormones in the water that promotes aggressive tendency. Breeding I feel increases that even more so then having just a female in the tank that's not breeding.

I also feel that if the community of fish start off as juvi's together it can hel as well. But even then any thing can happen

How about you sell me the istlanum and then it will work.

I think its gonna be a case of trial and error then, but keep a close eye of who's beating on who... I might end up with 2 or 3 female festae a single male Labiatus (or pair) and female istlanum, female salvini, large male melanurus, pair of Firemouths, pair of Neets sajica and various medium sized catfish (have 3 spotted talking cats).

I found myself in a similar situation. Wanting to condense tanks. Everyone tells me the same thing, it can't work. IF I were you I would go for it and thin out as necessary. I'm trying to locate a large tank now so that I can condense my tanks.

I don't agree with everyone. I know others to that don't also. I firmly believe its always trial and error due to individual personalities of fish and other factors as well. But there are some things that's are a given or create higher odds of having issues or problems. Such as mated fish.

I currently house a pretty large pair of Festae that appear to be ready to spawn again in an 8' 300 gallon community. They tolerate a 12" female Jag, 12" male Argentea and a few plecos and silver dollars. Male is pushing 13" or so female around 7-8". No divider used, but I have 2 ready to go if I/they need them.

It works for now, but for how long? who knows really. I have a few other options for housing fish if need be because what works today could end up not working tomorrow. Always be ready to move a fish if need be especially with pairs. Personally, I would not try another breeding pair in my setup though. Just my 2c
