7'x12' Plywood Build For My Rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sure have. It may be something I add into the system once I get things going. If I have time I am going to give my bottom drain thoughts a try on my stock tanks this weekend. I have only seen this setup one other time. I have no clue if it will even work but who knows.
Do you have pictures of your separators in your filtration thread?

Filter thread? Now Bob, I think my filter thread is like your "other" ray thread, for me to enjoy? :( ;)

Since you asked for pics, I'll post some pics for you this evening when I clean them. ;)

Maybe I really will do a thread...... It is the sweetest filter I've ever built, but unfortunately I've already found several flaws, so it's not done, but at least headed in the right direction. The rays are either really enjoying the filter, the UVs, or the lower conductivity water cause they sure seem happier then they've been in a long time.

Anymore updates silent bob ?

Was waiting on acrylic prices and am waiting on some fiberglass and resin. Tank gets moved this weekend and then I start possibly Sunday installing the plywood inside.

I almost crapped myself when I recieved my quote for 1" acrylic. To good not to pass it up. 3/4" would work but for a few dollars more why not!

I'd like to try acrylic cause of the clarity but I think is scratch it

I got a quote on 36 in tall by 8 feet panels and 36 in tall 3/4 wide 10 Foot panels.
I'll get my prices on here when I recheck my email later

I also got to research how wide of a tank I could go with 36 in high glass 3/4 in thick wide

I honestly couldn't even begin to tell you about glass prices. I would never use glass on a build like this. To many ways glass can break. Not so easy to break acrylic.

I thought sealing acrylic was a pain compared to glass since silicone doesn't stick to acrylic?

Not sure I'd ever use acrylic on a build like this...... ;)

You are somewhat correct on that. Silicone does not stick to acrylic like it would glass. It does however create somewhat of a gasket kind of like the filters on intex pools are installed. Same theory as a bulkhead with a rubber gasket. Only the nut holding it together would be the pressure from the water.

Not sure I would even bother with glass considering when a car is parked in the garage the window will be in smacking distance from a car door.

Looks good..

What kind of epoxy are you using with the glass mat? Get a metal roller to help with air bubbles. I wish I did when I put mine down. But I had never done it before and should have researched it a bit more. Good thing my bubbles are only in the middle and there was enough epoxy down before hand that it wasn't an issue.

About 800 on the viewing window is what I paid for each of my 1" acrylic windows. Where are you getting your quotes from? I can try to dig up the receipts if you need another quote.
