I'm sorry if that came across as being rude. It was nothing personal against you or whoever said that they'll get 3-4 feet. There's just a lot of misidentification regarding payara. It just seems like every payara thread that I open and read, someone is commenting about how large scombs get. The reason I say that I'm sorry is that scombs are super prone to ich. And I'm not questioning your abilities to keep them alive, but no one has succeded in keeping them long term. That includes the most elite hobbiests. I think it has something to do with a natural cycle that they go through (ie water parameter changes, mating, change in diet, ect.) that hasn't been accomplished in captive life. Or, they just have really short life spans. Redtails seem to adapt more easily to captive life. They are a lot hardier, and they have the attitude that goes along with the teeth they have. They are about 50 each. And if you don't get them in your LFS, there are vendors on this site that can ship them to you. If you want the full effect of owning a payara, I suggest you try some redtails. They are also slow growers, so you don't have to worry about them reaching the 12" plus lengths for a while. Hope this helped.

In reguards to stopping at just $40 per fish, we all thought this at one point. Sooner or later you too will fall victum of the addiction, it's just a fact of life  . Good luck, and happy fish keeping.

I wouldn't say 6 months. Maybe a year, depending on how your water quality is. I would over filter as much as possible and keep up on your water changes. They have to be done religiously. And honestly, buying them from a vendor is worth it. If you spent 80 for those two, you'll definately get your money's worth with the redtails. See if someone else wants to order something in your area, and split the shipping costs.

No need to be sorry. I was just trying to offer some friendly advice. Scombs are a good introduction fish to the payara family. I hope that your's are the ones to break the mysterious death streak. Good luck with them. Keep us posted on their progress.
