Garhog - you're correct, two ply tempered laminate is generally sized so that one of the sheets is strong enough, as laminating the two will not make it twice as strong. 1/2" tempered safety glass is more than strong enough for a 36" window, and $750 for a pane that size is a reasonable price, given it's specialty nature.

Having said that, 3/4" plate glass would be similarly effective, and quite reistant to impacts, but not quite as damage resistant as the laminate.

3/4" Polycarbonate sheet might be another possibility for you. It will scratch more easily, but it will have better clarity, and absolutely will not crack, no matter what happens to it.

thanks for the input have be considering all different materials wieghing out the pro and cons and am leaning toward the tempered laminate i think it will has good impact and scratch resistant qualities and decent afordabilty. am curious if anybody has an sugestions on how much clearance i should leave around the edges of glass for expansion. cvermeulen your 600 is awesome btw it convinced to build the filtration into my tank.:grinno::clap

Isnt a piece of 1" lami, 2 pieces of 7/16" glass and a 1/8" sheet of plastic in the middle? I know our 1/2" lami at work is 2 pieces of 3/16 glass and a sheet of 1/8" plastic.

im pretty sure the laminate i am looking at just has a thin film between layers i will double check for sure before i order if not i will go with 1 1/8 .thanks

I think you will need to leave about 10mm around the glass to allow for loads of sealent but dont hold me to that as i never put a window in a tank befor;)

Love what you are doing. When my Wife and I finally purchase a house I want to do an outdoor covered Pond/Aquarium. Problem I am forseeing is our summer heat. may have to cool the water in the summer and heat in the winter. hmmmm

Subscribed and watching.

yes I have considered this last summer I did a small pond a 200 gal or so for my aqautic turtles it was in direct sunlight for most of the day and never got to hot but did get cold and temps flucuated a lot. this tank will only get early morning sun and will be insulated I am also going to build an insulated lid and cover for the glass. for heat I am thinking two or three 1000 watt titanum heaters and a diy solar heating system to try and cut electrical cost since the price is so high here thanks for your comments and intrest

Insulate the tank and put a decent lid on it and you should be able to keep it warm with just one or two heaters. Water holds a lot of energy. So insulating it makes a huge difference.

Love the idea of solar.

But again I have to worry about our 3 months of 115 degrees during the day and 100 at night. just have to research it before I start. But that is a couple years away.

Keep up the good work,
