when I first got into this hobby, about 15 years ago (I feel like an old man saying that), I would do 90% water changes. here's how it went:

- take as much water out of the tank as i can, leaving enough for the fish to swim/flap around in.
- take out all filter cartridges and violently spray the crap out of them w/ a hose until it looked new.
- stick hose in and fill up.
- add (forgot the exact name) stress/slime coating liquid.

surprisingly enough, i don't recall ever losing fish b/c of this :screwy:

I think I was worse. My water changes were tearing the whole tank down washing everything including the gravel.

I myself was doing a crappy job for my common stock when I started...

Thats why I love MFK. Learned a lot, cool peeps and exotic fish:naughty::headbang2

What are yall talkin bout thats not how you do a water change?!?!?! jk dont go postal on me. I was pretty bad but i learned alot of what not to do from a friend that killed his fish all the time.

You mean you guys did water changes when you first got into the hobby? I just topped my tank off from evap, and changed my filter cartridges monthly like the box said!... And severly overstocked my tanks.

I did the tear down thing back when box filters were common and tanks mostly had metal frames and slate bottoms.

i still do 70% water changes, but i dont have delicate fish.

but i always thought there was a debate whether large wc are bad or not.

I still don't get why people r upset about high percentage water change.

Look at some discus keepers 99% water change at a time.
