....so how do you do a proper water change, im new to the hobby i usually gravel vac the bottom (sand) scrub the sides and do about a 50% water change every two weeks. and i treat the whole tank when adding water with prime.

You're doing it right.

for everyone who thinks that a 10%-50% water change once a week is fine I would highly advise you guys to read the Dec article in TFH on water changes by the editor.

I remember in 1995 when i started this hobby I use to take all the fish out and put them in buckets, then do a 100% wc and scoop as much gravel out into buckets and rinse them throughly in tap water under my bathtub faucets. Then clean filters and the tank inside and out. Set everything back up, add brand new water and a load of chemicals and in goes the fish. LOL man so much work back in the day.

When I first started in the hobby I would never change the water because I thought the filter did all the work.

It's amazing how many people (non aquarium owners) think this is what you are supposed to do.

i did a 100% water change before when i got into this hobby even when i was a little kid. it was the dumbest thing ive ever done in this hobby. took out all the water rinsed the rocks then fill in new water. but now i do a 50% water change only now.

when i was a boy i use to do a waterchange every 6mnths or when the water started to smell like fermenting wee (which ever came first) and when i did change the water it usually was around 90-98% water change. funny thing was my fish never died.

Yup my dad use to do it this way before I actually got into the hobby myself. In 1997 learnt the proper way for wc and maintainence and it took 2 years to find out and know how to lol.
