90% water changes!!

I had a feeder goldfish that I won at a fair that I kept in one of those critter keeper's. I used to put it in a red cup, dump out all the water from the tank and scrub it, and put the fish back in. No filter, air pump, heater, nothing. It lived for a little over a year and a half

i dont do 99% at one time but i have done like 2 50% water changes at different times of the day
Thats not that much, like 1 75%. Anyway, I used to get new driftwood for my goldfish tank like weekly-monthly, and changed the water when I couldnt see through it. Kinda cool looking actually...

Thats basically what my mom does to her betta no matter what I tell her. She wouldn't take a 10g setup when I offered it.

I think I was worse. My water changes were tearing the whole tank down washing everything including the gravel.

lol i use to do that. :D

Some of these postings are like flashbacks! I used to subject my fish to 100% h2o changes with untreated water as a little kid. I blame my parents for the lack of education. Then again I also wanted to pick my fish out of the tank to play with too.
Stupid stupid kid I was.

when I first got into this hobby, about 15 years ago (I feel like an old man saying that), I would do 90% water changes. here's how it went:

- take as much water out of the tank as i can, leaving enough for the fish to swim/flap around in.
- take out all filter cartridges and violently spray the crap out of them w/ a hose until it looked new.
- stick hose in and fill up.
- add (forgot the exact name) stress/slime coating liquid.

surprisingly enough, i don't recall ever losing fish b/c of this :screwy:

Oooooh, so that's why discus are so flat. So you can get the water level down to 1cm during a change!
HEY!!!!!! I coined that months ago ;)

Not as bad as me when i first got started my brother gave me his 75gal setup with 2 fish still in the tank. I took the setup down put the fish in a buckett and went home. So when i got home i noticed how dirty and slimy the inside of the tank was so i cleaned it using dish soap a rag and sprayed it down with the hose. After i was done i filled up the tank with reg water and added a little bit of aqua safe. Man im really surprised both fish lived through that LOL. Also when i was youger i had 10gal tanks i would add a little bit of aqua safe let it sit for 24 hours and ad fish. I kept on wondering why the pet shop kept on selling me sick fish all the time that died on me.

....so how do you do a proper water change, im new to the hobby i usually gravel vac the bottom (sand) scrub the sides and do about a 50% water change every two weeks. and i treat the whole tank when adding water with prime.
