That's like reaching around your back to scratch your elbow...but to each his own.
Complex filtration with pine cones and nut shells really doesnt matter in this case. It's not like your setting up saltwater or some giant system that would justify the trouble of what your wanting to do. Your canister with an add on will suit all of your O's needs and then some. Now I despise canisters so I understand the sump.
If you want to truly do the best for your Oscar stream line your water change system so they're practically automatic. Drip system and auto changes is what I recommend. Also a 90 is a tad small for a fish this size. A 120-125 would provide adequate space for moving, more space for naturalistic scaping (along with your leaves etc you want), & dilutes the fish toilet water. Water changes is priority number 1 and how to make them not a PIA so you'll do more of them.
You also shouldn't have crap floating around to the extent of having to net it 2x a day. You might want to reduce your pellet size so there's no so much waste out of the gills or make another adjustment like filter outlet placement.
I hope that didn't come across as a know it all douchebag, but hopefully help you avoid my mistakes along with investing money in a more beneficial area of your tank. Welcome to MFK
