950 Plywood/Acrylic Build on Wheels!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you might want to take another look at the 4x4 with the Dado cut in it that is holding your acrylic sheet in. When I look at that I see a potential for the post to split right along the grain. I suppose the aluminum channel along the bottom would help with this but perhaps a welded steel frame would work better? Look at the grain of the wood on those pieces and you will see what I'm talking about.

just something to consider. loving the progress though, going to be a sweet build.

This thing is built like an actual tank I'll give you that but some things just make me ask "why"?

This is maybe the Craziest Build I have ever seen! Good luck - I look forward to seeing how it turn out!

Yes, a steel frame all the way around would probably be better. The 4x4 will be re-inforced with 3/4 ply on the outside. Also when you look at the screws going into the 4x4, some of them are drilled deeper to catch the other supports where as the other ones where the screw is flush with the wood, that screw is to keep the wood from splitting all the way across. Thanks you for the feedback lets hope it holds up.

maybe instead of steel frame all around.. maybe just some angle steel mounted to the inside of that Dado. I understand the 3/4 ply attachment, but I think in reality that may be compromising the joint more as you are driving screws into the grain.. thus providinga good place for the grain to split.

it just that I have seen arrangements like this fail before, not in an aquarium, but you have the entire stress of the front panel on a 1" by 2.5" piece of wood. two pieces of angle steel would cost next to nothing.

ahhh. I think I understand, so.you have screws oriented parallel to the glass.... essentially securing the edge of the Dado to the rest of the post.. or am I getting it wrong?.
