in my Tegu's cage
im currently planning a big tank build and im pretty set on these dimensions (lxw) but the height im still unsure about. my main question is how thick of glass or acrylic will be needed for the 30'' compared to the full 36''? i tried searching for the answer but everything i read was a little different so i am unsure. the tank will be fully braced top, bottom, sides. any input is appreciated. thanks

3/4"-1" will work just fine...you can save $ by using thinner material and putting a center brace in the viewing window if your worried about bowing. I am using 1" acrylic for a 48" height but my 3 windows are only 4'x4' so it will support the height no problem. If my span was 6'-12' 1" material would not work as it would bow pretty bad.

I'm really leaning more towards glass do you know how thick I would need it if I did:
30"-?
36"-?
48"-?

Ahh...sorry lol i have a plethera of knowledge about acrylic and plastics but not anything on glass. Someone will chime in soon with more information. I think it pretty comparable to thickness for acrylic but there is a couple diff. Kinds of glass like tempered and plate. Not sure what that changes in thickness needed.

Well thank you for the input! I just think that glass will be cheaper option for how big of a sheet I need

You may want to look into a low iron glass called Sapphire. As you get into the thicker pieces of glass it turns green, the Sapphire glass stays clear even at greater thicknesses. Of course it’s more expensive…..
If you stay at the 30” depth you might be able to get away with ½” tempered, that’s thin enough to not notice the green. Any bump and 500 gallons goes right on the floor in less than 5 seconds.

i dont like the sound of that lol i just called a place for a quote on 3/4'' x96x40'' and it was over $1000. so either way i think the 30-36'' hight will be my best bet. do you think if i do i could get away with 5/8th''? the bottom of the tank will be either the 30-36'' but the actuall glass wont span the full top to bottom becasue it will sit about 6'' off the bottom. if that makes sence lol
