a 16 year old's attempt at cichlid keeping

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The tank is 4ft by 2ft and is 31 inches tall.and the sump is a 20gal

First off, tank looks fantastic......especially for a high schooler!

I agree with others, stock is not ideal. For that tank, I see a shoal of angelfish with cories scurrying along the bottom and a school if dithers darting around near the surface

I did too. Then everything decided to die. Just not going to spend a lot more money on fish that I just have awful luck with.

I agree with xraycer, for the top dwelling dither's personally a small group of Hatchet fish.:)

Nice work with the setup. I'm probably the 10th person to mention you should add more bio and reexamine the sticklist. The aquascaping is excellent, and if you want to keep it that way you should get rid of the aggressive large cichlids. I think a shoal of electric blue acara would look sweet in there, they are colorful and have great personalities. They aren't too expensive.

The largest tank I had when I was 16 was 60 gallons. Having to rely only on LFS employee knowledge and tropical fish magazines lol, MFK makes it really accessible for anyone of any age to thrive at the hobby.

Looking forward to updates!

Looks great, nice job! When I 16 living in a rural area that tank would have been the most amazing tank in a 100 mile range.

That tank's awesome. I think it's the plants, the aquascaping, it's really nice. I can't keep plants at all, and I"ve always wanted to. But, the fish that don't tear up plants are the community fish that I don't like. :)

so, if you end up experimenting with some cichlids and find out that maybe Sajica or Carpintis don't bother plants, let me know.

Hey guys, I know the plants will probably end up getting destroyed. To be honest, I'm willing to take the chance. I don't mind if when they get bigger they kill all the plants. The fish are my main focus and honestly, the plants make my fish more comfy NOW while they are little. It's gives them somewhere to hide. The scape will definitely end up changing in the future if I don't upgrade to a larger tank, hopefully a 210 or larger. We shall see.

I have 30+ African Peacocks in my 180 planted tank, so you never know if they will destroy them or not, by all accounts mine should be shredded by now. Still, looks great now and you may get away with them and big fish.

I hope so! I like the planted look and my fish seem to like them too. Gives them a place to hide.
