It doesn't really matter, JD's are much harder to pair up then convicts. Best plan is to get a 55, buy 5 juvi JD's and find the eventual pair that comes up, then take the rest back.
Although the JD's grow rather slow for a cichlid, the time it'll take to maybe get a pair (i'm bad at ID'ing JD's but you may have a m/f but i'm doubting a pair at this point) and to get them breeding, if you provide the correct water and food requirements to breed them you'll get maybe 1 spawn in before they are too large for your 29 and thats assuming everything goes perfectly, and rarely do they ever in the world of fish. Of course with the other fish in there it'll actually probably hamper their chances of breeding very quickly, so if the LFS employee/owner really did tell you to try and breed these for him/her you have to take them back and tell them that it turns out you don't have the necessary equipment to get them to pair up and spawn.
I'd say the minimum tank size for 1 JD is a 38 gallon, and thats only because of its decent dimensions. A 29 just won't cut it.
Please decide what you want to do to make your fish happy. Put their happiness slightly before yours and soon you will be happy.
Formula: Happy Fish (Appropriate tank + Good perims X food - constant change + TLC) = Happy Fishkeeper (CB in this case)
