Depending on the dimensions a 700 still will most likely be to small. And these kinds of fish eat huge amounts of food so be prepared. Mine fish eat $40-$60 per month worth of food and there still small, the biggest being a 20" arowana. And don't skimp out ok filtration, I have more then $500 worth of filtration on my 180 and plan on doubling it.
no im not worried about half assin the filtration ill do what needs to be done im juss wondering what will be easier on my electric bill hella fluvals or one big sum and like 2 fluvals? plus im not worried about food that probably the thing that i can possibly cut corners on example instead of buyin a 1/4 lb. of beefheart from the pet store for 6 bucks i can go to the local grocery store and buy 3 lbs of beefheart for $1.99. as far as my pacus go im sure i can do the beefheart once in awile but your right it will be pricey to feed them. also i just went to my freinds house and he just got a dough boy pool and he was talkin about it having a filter, protien skimmer and what not. it held 4,500 gallons could this possibly work as a fish pond if slightly modified?
The pond probably costs about fifty bucks per month in electricity and water bills. That's just an estimate. You really need to look into filtration. Also, tank size. If you're going to build, you may as well build something more in the 1000 gallon range, which will hold him for life. Check out the DIY section of this forum for ideas on filtration, and see what everyone says is the best. Like I said, my filter is built into the pond, and I only run canisters and sumps on tanks 125 gallons and under (about to do my first DIY sumnp with a 180 soon), so I'm not sure what you'd need to do. They'll be able to help -- also, in the indoor pond section, you'll probably get some info.
As for your friend's pool, you'll need to see what kind of filtration it has. Pools usually don't have the kind of turnover you'll need for the RTC. Where are you putting this thing? Do you have a basement, or a house on a slab? If not, the floor will need reinforcing.
Also, Pacu are primarily vegetarian. They can reach lengths of three feet, and at least half that in height. You'll need to do some research there, as well. Read, read, read.
Hiya there, i love the heart you have for your red tail cat. Really think about this though, but in filtration i am a great believer in DIY. You can buy 2 water bins cos i work as a labourer and the water bins we buy hold 250 liters of water each i suggest you buy 2 of these at £30 each so like 20 dollers drill them both near the top and link the two. Fill one with bio balls providing a massive bio section, and fill the other with very large mechanical media. I get mine for £5 per circle and they measure 2 foot across, wich rather convineatly fits in the bin.I remove 1 disk at the bottom and put a new one on top every two weeks. and i had 0 nitrate and ammonia. You have to drill a hole in the tank like for a sump. All in all will cost you around 200 dollors and works great.
WISH YOU ALL THE BEST WITH YOUR RED TAIL CAT, GOOD LUCK.
(i want some pics lol)
well i appreciate evrybodys input, opinions, and help!! EVEN THOUGH ITS NOT WHAT I WANNA HEAR lol!! it is what it is because im not about to juss give the fish up, i got into the hobby in november of last year and feel like i cam a long way since then (knowledge wise). and im not the type of person to get a pet and just throw it away because i cant take care of it. i guess the fish fever hit me pretty hard (amongst my circle of friends) but everybody on here gives me more than a run for my money!! ok BILLBOB i have an idea of wat you are saying but honestly im not that mechanically inclined!! i mean i thought i was the S H I T for building a DOGHOUSE!!! ha ha so would it be possible for you to post any pictures so you can explain to me step by step how its built and how it works?? because honestly im lost by what everyones telling me mechanicall wise. its a damn shame that i cant get this done easily because my dad & grandfather are both skilled woodsman and have no interest in helping me. so im depending on random folks on here to walk me through it and also GARF.net. oh and as for the pictures im broke and dont have a digital camera!! but as soon as somebody comes thru with one this thread will be the 1st to see em!
and as far as the pacu goes, im already knowin what im in for with him ive heard it all from how fast they grow, to how much they eat, all that. maybe your right maybe i should just go 4 a 1000 gallon build what dimensions do you suggest, if im planning on a 700 gal then surely it wont be that much more expensive considering its a plywood build. i know it will cost more in filtration. oh yea and BILLBOB would this filter your explaining do the same job as canister filters. what im asking is if i do your idean will that eliminate me spendin hundreds of dollars on canister filters? maybe save me sum money?
If you google search volume calculator or aquarium volume calculator you'll be able to find a tool which allows you to just plug in the dimensions and it will tell you the total gallons. This is cool because you can play around with the numbers without having to do the math. You don't necessarily need much height, probably about two and a half feet or three feet would be good if you plan on getting pacu. You don't want anything too narrow, as the RTC can grow in excess of four feet long. Just mess around with the numbers, and see what you get as far as gallonage.
