A few new pics from the green terror tank.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Beautiful scape and the fish look really well grown out in there. It looks like they use the space well.

Thank you.
Quite an active species that likes to swim, not really a fish that likes to lurk in caves.
I wouldn't keep this many in anything smaller.

I have tried to upload videos but it seems to take forever to upload.Maybe I am doing something wrong?
To be perfectly honest I hadn't even noticed the white tips on the dorsal fins until you mentioned it.I wonder if it's a kind of mating dress for mature females that are ready to spawn?Their cheeks turn kind of white when they are spawning. Or maybe it a regional variants thing ie Rio Tumbes or Rio Esmereldas etc.To be honest I don't know
Hmmmmm yea it's interesting. As our Gts appear to be very similar looking. My male I believe will be almost exact same shape and colours as yours once he's big. Wondering if they are a similar strain or location of saum or as I said earlier if a white has been crossed in somewhere along the lines. Would be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced the same. Sorry for hijacking your awesome tank thread btw mate.

No problem. Infact I would like to get to the bottom of this white dorsal fin thing.

Personally I don't think it's a cross thing between white and gold saums. Firstly I was told my fish were bred from f1 parents. If that is true then both parents would be gold edged.
Secondly,it seems though just the females have this trait. As you can see no sign of silver/white on this male.

The male is solid gold throughout all its fins with no sign of any white.

Then I started looking at the females. All five of them show this uniform white dorsal stripe.

This female is protecting eggs and the stripe is even more pronounced.

I think it's some sort of breeding dress for mature females. Note how the females chin area is very white and how high held the dorsal fin is.It could be a defensive colour pattern to outline the fish to make it look bigger in murky water creating a larger outline for the defensive female.
This is all guesswork on my part so it may be something else, but for now that's what I believe it to be.

Was looking through some old pics of the females as I could not remember if they had this white stripe when they were young.
I noticed that the white is not as developed in the younger fish.

The white edge is starting here but does not reach all the way back to the rise of the dorsal.

The more I look onto this the more convinced I feel that it is a female breeding dress. It is definitely something that develops with maturity when you compare the younger fish in the pics above to this pic of a mature female guarding eggs.

I reckon you've hit the nail on the head there mate. I'm assuming your fish are all related? I'm 90% mine are too but here in South Australia it's hard sourcing nice bloodlines and very likely every gt in the country are related anyways. But same as you my male does not have a hint of it and I'm now expecting my small female to develop the white now, all makes perfect sense especially looking at how white that girls throat is(mine was same whilst spawning). Def think your onto something here tho mate. Enjoying the discussion actually plus it means you puttin up more pics of these beauties haha, cheers mate

I've actually got a topic about this probably quite a few pages back now but I'm pretty sure you weren't frequenting the forum then like you do now. It was prob about 2-3 months ago from memory.

What was the title of your thread. Do you remember? I wouldn't mind a look at that.

Would you use her for breeding? Was the name from memory. I'll be interested to hear Duanes opinion on this subject actually.
