you must teach me. where is this book you speak of. If itll get my pics anywhere near that im buying it for sure!

and for some reason I am getting the idea your shoooting these with a setup that goes well into the 1000s. I am shooting a canon 400d, with a old school flash on a shoecord and a 30 dollar slave flash :P

There is no book, sorry. At least ont yet. :naughty:

If you counted everything in my camera bag, yes it's in the 1000's, but it's not necessary. It can eb done with an old school slave unit and cord. It's a matter of practice and experimenting. :)

Where's Rallysman? He shoots with a D50, an aftermarket lens, and a single flash and takes superb pics!

rally does take nice pics n he taught me a few things but ive never seen pics like urs before... the colors r so clear and full. it seems like the pics look better than the fish does in person. SO what do you mean by powering down your flash? I dont think mine has that option, then again it is old and i need a new one. Could you make send me a link to one on wolfcamera.com that would be good with a canon 400d (i think in the states its called the rebel xti)

With your camera, this is what I would use.

You'll need a flashcord or a transmitter to fire the flash from above the tank. I'm not too familiar with Canon systems.

I can set the power output on my flashes, so I'm not bound to letting the camera set the flash power and I don't have to fire them at full power, which would simply be too much. For even coverage on the fish, I use more than one flash, and so full power would be way too much.
Using a lot of light brings out the colours and details and also allows me to close off the aperture, allowing more dof (depth-of-field) which in turn allows me to bring more of the fish in focus.

To some degree, my pics can make a fish look better than in real life, but only because of the amount of light the flashes produce. The next best thing to compare to would be metal halide lighting. Most of us have 40 or 80 watts of light over our tanks. Put 500 watts and see the difference it would make. I'm not misrepresenting the fish at all. What you seein my pics would be what you'd see if you were standing in front of my tank. :)

funny you showed the exact same flash I was going to buy anyway :P
And yea I know all about using an external flash, my pics are not bad. most ppl on the forum would say they are really good but now ive seen yours i have something new to strive for.

Could you maybe copy and paste that story into a post in my Camera Thread (sticky) and post some of ur pics? Im sure ppl would appreciate that..

wow awesome shots!
