1. What is their usual aquarium size/length?

2. Are they prone to DE?

3. Are they as passive/unaggressive as silvers?

4. Are they real jumpy like silvers?

Thanks.

I've had two different black aros. One I've had for near two years. The other I got as a baby but it jumped out of the tank, so I can only have limited comments regarding it.

1. What is their usual aquarium size/length?

My current black I got in Feb of 07 at 11" and is now only 19". She is a very picky eater so this may have something to do with it. The baby black went from 2.5" to 9" in 4 months, ate everything it could. If you do a search "Boydo" had a 30" black aro.

2. Are they prone to DE?

Have never seen or heard of a black with DE

3. Are they as passive/unaggressive as silvers?

I would say overall yes, individual personalities though.

4. Are they real jumpy like silvers?

To me the are more cautious then silvers, they are skittish but are in more control of their outburst then silvers. My black very seldom has hit the lid or anything else. I did loose the baby black to jumping at night though.

Bsed on the black aro I kept for a bit over two years back around 00-02...

1. What is their usual aquarium size/length?
a standard 180g (6x2x2') would last for 2-4+ years depending on growth rate. Bigger would be better, if you're planning something "for life" go with an 8'x30" footprint at least. Mine took a bit over 2 years to get from 6" to just under 2' on nothing but pellets.

2. Are they prone to DE?
No, I've never seen a black with DE

3. Are they as passive/unaggressive as silvers?
Probably less aggressive than silvers IMO, but as Bderick said it will vary from fish to fish

4. Are they real jumpy like silvers?
Yes they can be jumpy, a larger aquarium will help. When mine was over 20" in a 5x2x2' tank it would freak out quite easily.

1. What is their usual aquarium size/length?

I have 2 - 17". Started at 10" -11" back in april. I used to have a 24" one as well, (it's for sale and local to you..)

The 24" is in a 210 gallon (6x2) right now..he was in it with 2 endlies.

2. Are they prone to DE?

NEVER seen any with DE, the 24" did not have a DE

3. Are they as passive/unaggressive as silvers?

All my blacks are very easy going. Never hit the lid or going on a crazy aggresive spree. I have had 7-8 blacks to this day.The smaller ones are so tame, they let me pet him as they know they're gettign fed. I caught the 24" with a 5 gallon bucket nad he goes right in without a fight..he's very gentle for his size..

4. Are they real jumpy like silvers?

Not at all, leichardti is the worst when it comes to jumpiness. My Lei thinks he's the king of the tank, he messes with the silvers, but never touches the black.

Thanks.

You're welcome

2.No
3. Less agressive than silvers
4. More nervous than silvers when grown.

:ROFL:best thread title of the day:grinno:

Thanks so much for the quick and informative replies. You guys are great. An lfs in mini-chinatown here has a couple in stock and I read they don't get as big as silvers so I had this glimmer of hope that I might be able to keep one. Unfortunately I'm no baller so due to space, funds and spousal (mostly spousal lol) reasons, a 7' x 2' x 2.5' would have to be a life tank. Do you guys think that it would be wide enough?

I would think there is a good chance that a black aro would never outgrow your tank. Personally I think even if it did get near 30" long the 24" width would not be that bad. Once it did get that big, I would think that you would not have a hard time finding a new home if needed.
