I would think there is a good chance that a black aro would never outgrow your tank. Personally I think even if it did get near 30" long the 24" width would not be that bad. Once it did get that big, I would think that you would not have a hard time finding a new home if needed.

I was really sad when I rehomed my Silver but it was awesome having him for the time I did. I knew he would eventually outgrow my tank so had to give him up (to a good home) when I had the chance.

I don't want to buy a black and have to go thru that again. If I can keep him permanantly I'll get him, if not, I don't want to. Any other opinions on a 'for life' pet in my tank? Miguel says they average about 24" but I guess they can get 30"? Is that about the max you think? Are they as flexible as their silver cousins?

They are as flexable as a silver, and 24 inches sounds a bit conservative.

If they do get smaller, yes, a black would work. A Jar would work also, seeing as the length of the Jar matches the width, but black would probably fare better.

Or, you could probably go for a school of African Butterfly Fish. They only grow to about 4-6 inches and are aptly named Mini-Arowanas for more reasons than just looks:

Try hitting return after each pic, this way you'll avoid this screwed up post:irked:
