Hopefully next Tuesday I will be receiveing a 5" Tigrinus and 6 Red Hook Silver Dollars for my 180 that has been fishless cycling. I am wondering a few things though. What is the best food for a small Tigrinus, also wondering about best temp, ph, gh, kh and nitrate sensitivity. I have googled all of this and get a lot of different opinions so I thought I'd ask guys who actually have them. Thanks!!

yay i love little tigs id get one but there to expensive for me i feel the same way about online fish stuff cause all sites always say somthing else i always like to ask mfk cause there the ones that know but ive never kept a tig so i cant tell u

At 5", a Tigrinus is a very capable eater. Bloodworms and blackworms are rarely rejected, so that's a good start to fatten them up. Market shrimp, krill, and earthworms are also suitable options. In some cases, you'll get lucky and have a Tig that eats pellets.

Water parameters are not much different than any other fw fish. Temp is best at 78-80*, pH of 6.5-7.0 is ideal. These guys are very sensitive to ammonia, so be sure to keep up with your water changes.

I don't have a Tig, but have been researching them for when I do get one.

Ph of slightly acidic to neutral should be fine. The key is consistency and CLEAN water. Tigs (specially juveniles) are sensitive to elevated levels of nitrates and of course, ammonia.

I agree with Tainted, blackworms are great starter food.. a healthy juv tig will eat bw until its stomach is swollen. Another great starter food would be guppies. Quarantime some for a week then introduce them in the tank with the tig. They are a semi renewable source too because they will certainly breed in that tank.

Have fun.. tigs are fun fish to grow out.

PS: They will at times do that non stop swimming up the walls. Its perfectly normal.
:)

In my experience with silver dollars (black bars, not red hooks) its hit or miss. I've had them ranging from docile to downright dangerous. When dealing with a Tigrinus, its not a risk I'm willing to take. I know 'Tigrinus' on this board has a Tig and Juruense with a nice school of red hooks without any real problems. Both his cats look top grade.

Ming had a problem keeping tigs with silver dollars.. the sd picked on the tig.
so thats not a safe choice

mine is separated in a section of my 75gallon. The only other fish in there is a
delhezi of around the same size as the tig.
