A few Tigrinus questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Let me pose this question, how boring would the tank be if I didn't keep ANY tankmates in with him? I am pretty paranoid about aquiring such an expensive fish and want to give it the best environment possible. I truly want to make the Tig a pet and interact with him. If the Tig got ich from a junky barb or something I'd be really pissed at myself. Maybe I should wait untill I get my indoor pond set up (16' x 5' x 4') and put a Tig in there? I was planning on a RTC for the pond, but a Tig may be a better fit for it anyway? I want the pond to house some Aros and Cats. Maybe I should go with a shoal of Piranha or something for the 180 and wait on the Tig?? A RTC would probably be too big for the pond anyway, and would probably trash the Aros??

I love Tigs more than your averag hobbyist, but I could never devote an entire tank to them. They hide for most of the day and are active when lights are out. Not very impressive. Good looks can only get you so far. You don't want to put a Tig that size in a pond that large. Finding food will be a nightmare.

Ph of slightly acidic to neutral should be fine. The key is consistency and CLEAN water. Tigs (specially juveniles) are sensitive to elevated levels of nitrates and of course, ammonia.

I agree with Tainted, blackworms are great starter food.. a healthy juv tig will eat bw until its stomach is swollen. Another great starter food would be guppies. Quarantime some for a week then introduce them in the tank with the tig. They are a semi renewable source too because they will certainly breed in that tank.

Have fun.. tigs are fun fish to grow out.

PS: They will at times do that non stop swimming up the walls. Its perfectly normal.
:)
Good I saw Chris' doing that the other morning...so I put the lights on and he went staight to the bottom and just chilled. I though he was going crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can always add tankmates later,,,why not just start out with it alone? If you get way too bored you can add some tank mates.

i have a 14" tig............he is in 4x2x18" high tank, with 14" florida gar.....tank is bare bottom with one Aqua Clear 300 and AC 500........got him at around 8" back in may

i think ur 180 is way too big for 5" tig......gonna have a hard time feeding this small guy......i would put him in smaller tank to get him eating and gradually move him to the 180

the thing about my tig is he only likes to eat mp in the dark...........damn lights have to be off for him to eat......something i don't like too much since feeding time is one of the joys about this hobby

pick a tankmate that likes top third of tank........beware of tankmates that might nip at his streamers

good luck

I don't think he'll have a problem, especially if he has only a Tig in the tank at first. When the lights go out, they come alive and are constantly searching for food. They are great hunters and will track down an earthworm or prawn with ease. But you do have a valid point. If you throw the Tig into an already established mix, he's going to have a tough time with competition for food.
