A few Tigrinus questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Save your money lol. That's the only way to put it. I'm 16 and between saving for a car, fish, girls, hangin out, I'm broke.

A temp of 80degrees F is good. Ph of 6.8. Ummm as for feeding, I usually start off the catfishes on black worms and then switch over too uncooked shrimp as quickly as possible.

NOT RECOMENDED but honestly, i dont even have a test kit anymore. I figure adding some driftwood brings the pH down enough. Enough water changes keeps the nitrates down. I can usually tell when a water change is needed. I never payed attention to KH and GH.

yeah im a rebel,,,just kidding. Once tigs are settled they are pretty tough. You should always have a test kit on hand though.

Would Tinfoil Barbs or Bala sharks be better than the Silver Dollars? I'd like to have something swimming around because it's a big tank and I know that 99% of the time the Tig will just lay there. I can't get my water ph to go lower than 7.5 even with R/O, my tap is 8.4!!! with a GH of 30ppm!!! yes 30 and a TDS of 700, it's awful so I use 100% RODI and reconstitute with R/O right to a GH/kh of 3-5 to avoid ph crashes. My main concern is that I don't want hostile tankmates in with the Tig, it's not just the $310, I just don't want to subject him to harasment, maybe I should rethink the Balas or Tinfoils, they are very peaceful from what I have read??

It should do but keep them pretty well fed. Tinfoils and Balas get annoying
and start eating the slime off other fishes when they get hungry.

Are Balas and Tinfoils equally peaceful? I think the Balas may look a little nicer but?? Both, I assume are safer than Silver Dollars right?

They are safer but they can pick on other fish too ! Tinfoils are more beautiful at large sizes than balas. Great scales and the red in the dorsal and tail becomes really intense as they get bigger.

I had 3 extra large tinfoils (15 " +) from the mule but they picked on my rays too much so i had to get rid of them.

Have you considered dats? Maybe a pbass is in order? Both should be alright and are awesome fish in their own right.

Would 3 or 4 Tinfoils be a good number in a 180 along with a Tig? I know they say the magic number for schooling fish is 6 but I want to keep my bio-load low to prevent disese and such?

depends what size. also if youre going to get a 5 inch tig. it would be a safe choice
to isolate it first till it gets bigger. that way it doesnt have to compete for food and less stress.
