I agree festivums are a little underrated.
They were a little plain as juveniles but as you mentioned, they get some lovely blues, greens and yellows to them when they put on some size.
They also play nice with other cichlids ime.

Awwww...The Blue Gravel Phobia!

I "rescued" about 3 buckets of this with a dozen free fish and tank, and I have been slowly cycling it into the sumps & out of sight.

I have always had natural gravel and sand, and all this garish glofish stuff nearly drove me out of the hobby.
