Well if you cared about helping this fish keeping novice further advance his abilities to house monster fish then you would agree with what I said. He doesnt have the ability to house it, he has no knowledge and did no research before buying, and probably has never kept fish before.

Thats how some people learn. Not everyone on here started off perfect. Ive had my share of mistakes. Best thing to do when you see it happen is give them all the info you can, and share your stories with them. Dont scare them off. There could of been a better way to say what you said.

That all being said, he got the answer to his question, so this should just be dropped, and lets help him out

so can i keep the RTC when full grown in a pool 10feet by 10feet and about 30" deep?

Yes but you will need tons of filtration and that cheap pool from target will not stand the test of time .What you need to do is look at plasticmarts website (google it) and a few others and that is the kind of tank you need to be safe .Or you can go a outside pond route but you need to factor in the problem with it getting too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter and you have to dig it .

hmm well over here in cali temps only get to like 69 and 70 and i would get a heater for it too

yeh but the thing is that u dont have to panic. ultimately red tail catfish are extremely hardy fish. if u cant keep a redtail then there r a lot of fish who wont stand a chance with u. good luck.

My first fish was a rtc. I got him at 4" in a 55 gal uncycled aquarium. Every fish died during the cycle but the rtc and an oscar. I grew the rtc out to about 18" in the 55 gal, then I bought a 125 gal. I grew him to about 28" in there before he died of brown blood desiese. I had him 2 years. Much shorter life span than what they can live(20+ years). If only there was MFK back then lol. I might still have him, and he would be a monster at 12 years old. I didn't know about ponds and stuff like that back then, but you have us here at MFK to help you out. So take in all the advice that you are getting here, and apply it fast and continous. I think frequent water changes are key in keeping big cats. They produce enormous amounts of waste, and toxins build up in their systems over time. Needless to say the cleaner your water is the healthier your cat will be and the longer it will live. My rtc had daily %25 water changes when he was in a 10 gal, at 6" I moved him to a 75 gal with every other day %25 water changes, and at 12" I moved him to a 1100 gal indoor heated pond, and he gets %40 water changes every 5 days. After 4 1/2 months he's 14 1/2", Good luck

i agree with necro. u can spend less money on almost every part of ure tank or pond or tub but the one aspect u cannot stinge on is the filter. in fact, pumps and filtration media make up the majority of the costs for my tank and pond because i realise the importance of it - especially for big cats. not surprisingly i have successfully raised 6 majestic beasts from infant age.
