since around mid january. its a weird individual among a shipment he got in, and the only one at the time, so it wasn't on the list. it wasn't even given a name :D

Nice score then!! :D

I'm planning to get these, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that thought they were hybrids right away when I saw the pics.

Very cool natural hybrid, doesn't that create a new species?

thanks man :)
if it's really a hybrid, it won't make a new species. i think the proper way is to label as 'A x B'.

but i tend to be wary about labeling something wild caught a hybrid (at least not with certainty), since i don't believe natural hybrid occurs that often, but some of the bichirs coming out of Guinea do make you wonder...i guess there's no way to know for sure, unless some genetic study is done, or unless it's blatantly obvious.

i was asking toyin about the new bichir, and he thought the new one he has now and this one i got are different...

Wow hmm, did he mention if they were collected in the same spot or not?

Even looking at the pics of sp. 'Dabola', I saw variation. Some that looked like your fish, and one in particular that looked like a congicus 'Dabola'

I better hurry on my college education so that I can study these amazing fish! I'll take a bullet to know the truth! :D

sounds good :D

as for the collection location, not specifically. apparently the new one is from around Dabola, and he said that he was told that they were collected from a lake, but he personally doesn't know. As for mine, even back in january, he only remembered that it came in with a group of shipment from guinea, but that's about it.

i thought the new one looks a bit like mine at first, but he was saying how the new one is really not like endlicheri (in particular the head and the dorsal finlets count), whereas i think mine has more of the body form of an endlicheri (and of course some other weird non-endli characteristics)....we'll see...

just an update, for Cohazard and anyone else who followed the last several posts, now that i see both, i'd say the new one (sp. Dabola) is different from the bichir i posted in this thread.

Can we get some side by sides soon? :D

Thanks for the update!

i don't have side by side shots, but here are pics of the 'sp. Dabola'. maybe put the pics side by side manually...sorry.

what i notice is the unknown bichir in this thread seems to have a wider body relative to its size, compared to the 'sp. Dabola'. Number of dorsal finlets, color etc. are different too.
