A new tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
"This piece of smoke colored glass is 48" across from flat edge to flat edge and the flats are 19 1/2".
“According to the calculator I have I can get away with 6mm at 24" tall if less than 24" of width.”

These contradictory statements are where I think the 6mm guide may fail. Depth governs the pressure but length and width, of the body of water, govern the force.
Also 6mm will not take much of a bump from _either_ side of the glass and (I presume) with eight glass panels the placement of the tank will be central and more likely to be bumped accidentally.
That being said I’m sure 6mm will hold water but your safety factor will be low.
Good luck with the build.

Hmmm, sure that tank should go in a corner? I'd want it smack in the middle of the room!

thnx yogurt, the glass calculater I have says 6mm can be used up to 24 x 24. My viewing areas will be 17.25 wide and 20 tall. The math says it'll work.

Just hope you don't have kids that might bump into your tank. I have been building glass tanks for about twenty years and trust me when I tell you than anything with a safety factor under 3 is not worth your while building. But hey, it's your floor

@Yogurt 21,
keep your pants on:chillpill:

I did a little more work last got the side glued and fastened together. I used PL glue and drilled countersunk holes 6 inches apart staggered from either side of the frame so there is a screw every three inches. Today I have to start by lifting it off of the base and planing the base nice and flat for the glass to rest on.

About the middle of the room. Sorry guys I don't have a room on my house big enough to do that. I wish I did.

My glue dried overnight so I was able to do some planing and sanding this morning. I fastened the frame to the base and filled the slight gap around the inside edge with some good old bondo.

Here's a pic of a test fit with the glass bottom. I have just a little less than 1/4" all the way around so I should have a nice tight fit after I fibreglass.
