Last night i came home from work to find one of my uaru dead. it was upside down on the bottom of the tank. I turned the lights on befor i left for work, fed them and every thing was fine. No one showed any signs of sickness at all. They were all in perfect health.
The tank is a 92gal corner bowfront
Filtration is a rena XP3 and fluval 405 (sponges an bio media only)
PH is 7.6
Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = hardly detected...possible 5ppm
40% water changes on this tank every 2-3 days
tank mates are two other uaru and 8 corydoras
Diet is all Hikari pellet foods. (sinking gold, cichlid excel, discus bio-gold)
also feed romane lettuce and Hikari bio-pure frozen bloodworms.
I have no idea as to what the cause to this fish dieing so suddenly is.
Like i said, this fish was in perfect health befor i left to work. I study each fish every day to insure their health and all seemed fine.
The only thing i can think is that it was killed by one of my other uaru.
heres why: A few weeks ago, the largest of the 3 laid eggs. she is about 8 inches or more while the other two uaru are only about 7 inches each. so ithink that she may have killed the other uaru as it may have been female, and compitition for the remaining male uaru(if it is male)
The large female that laid eggs has bright yellow eyes and her anal fin was rounded and does not extend past her tail fin. the one that died looked the same. The other remaining uaru has bright red eyes and the anal fin is very pointed and extends past the anal fin.
After the female uaru laid eggs it was always trying to chase the uaru that died to get to the red eyed uaru. So possibly this may have been the cause of death? the largest female uaru killed the smaller female uaru to be able to spawn the the remaining male? There were not alot of signs of injuries to the dead uaru besides some new scrapes.
Any one have any ideas??????
hopefully the death was not in vain and i now have a pair..... or maybe the fish was killed due to cramped quarters?
below is a pic of the dead uaru.
please ask if there is any more info needed....
I should add that i have had all 3 uaru since they were 1 inch, water conditions have nbeen the same since purchase. The largest uaru i have had for 1 year,, the other two i have had for 6 months.
