A sad day in uaru land.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had 3 uaru's the largest was close to 10"..Two paired up and became very aggressive to the outsider I had to split them up .. Unfortunately I had to get rid of the pair, they would reek havoc in any tank they laid eggs in... I still have the one she’s getting close to 9+" now an she’s a beut.

Unexplained deaths in this hobby and in life are so frustrating, sorry for your loss...

Sorry for your loss... I'm looking for uarus to so you want come with to go uaru shopping?

Thanks for the offer, but we're over 700 miles apart, so i'll have to pass.
good luck with the search though! uaru are not the most common cichlid to come by, but with some patience and some searching, im sure you'll find some!

After only two days of the uaru being killed, my female has laid eggs already! So maybe it is possible that she did in fact kill the other female uaru for rights to the male. Below is a few pics of the pair. I was at work while the eggs were laid , so i cannot say whether they are fertile or not.(time will tell) I also doubt they will hatch as the uaru will most likly eat them befor they get a chance as this is only the second time she has laid eggs.

Below are pics of them both as of about 20minutes ago.
Not the red eyes of my suspected male, and the yellow eyes of my confirmed female. The female also has shorter and less pointed fins than the "male" as well. so maybe these are tell tale signs of sexing uaru? They never got the red/yellow eyes, or the finnage till around the 5 inch mark though. befor then, all of the uaru's fins looked the same and eyes were more of an amber color.

first two are of the "male"
second are of the female with eggs3

excuse the quality of the pics, i just snapped a few quik shots.

That sucks man, sorry to hear it. I'd agree that most likely case is the bigger female killed the other. Strange though, as I didn't see physical damage on the dead one, could you see any?

One thing that's interesting...I'd always understood that uaru could only be sexed by venting but maybe secondary characteristics like finnage and eye color are somewhat reliable. Your "male" is a dead ringer for my uaru re: eyes and fins, and I've long suspected mine is a male as well.

No i didnt see any damage do to the uaru, except for a few scratches that looked like bite marks on her flanks. Im thinking maybe she stressed and died?

I do feel that females will generally have yellow eyes, and males having red eyes as well as different finnage, but this is not for certain. and mine didnt really look much different from each other until the 5 inch mark, and at this size, venting would be more reliable anyway.

wow-im sorry for your loss! she was beautiful, and a big girl. i am betting it was a breeding issue, and she was killed. but, i dont see any damage to her, so thats odd. they may have stressed her to death..

glad to see the pair have mated! hopefully you get lots of babies.

thanks for the kind words! Unfortunatly, they ate the eggs a day after they were laid. But it seems as though she lays eggs every 3 weeks or less, so they'll get the hang of it in no time.
I dont want to remove the eggs as the fry feeds off of the parents slime coat like discus, so i'd like to see that happen. I'd also like to witness their parenting skills. so i'll just let them do thier own thing.

They are now inseperable so i hope the bond lasts and my female doesnt attack this one as well.
