This is sweet. I just started keeping bass like a couple of months ago. I've had a cichlid tank for almost 2 years now and thought I'm gonna try bass. I've never talk to anyone who has kept bass. I knew they were out there but this is AWESOME!!!

Okay so I'm knew to bass keeping and I've done kinda a trial and error. So far I've not lost any bass and they lived through ick. Infact my smallies got the ick pretty bad BUT my LMB didn't get it AT ALL!!! Very hardy fish.

Any advice would be great. I've been reading about weening them to certain foods. I am going to do that. But I'd like to know like...

what PH you keep the tank at? The lake I got them from was like 8.2 and my tank is 7.3 they seem to be doing great but should I match the lake?

I read the frog post and I am 100% gonna feed them frogs come spring.

I currently have 4 (two smallies and 2 large mouth) in a 75 gallon tank. NOW NOW I KNOW THATS WAAAAAYYYYY TO SMALL. But do not fret. At this point the largest one is like 3.5 inches and they are all doing great. I plan on getting them a huge tank and narrowing it down to 2 or building the pond I want for them.) and this will happen pretty soon.

But do they grow fast?

Okay I have a million questions but some of you bass keepers give me some info. Anything would help.

Thanks

Yea they grow pretty dang quick. I got mine in about mid July at under and inch and he is now 4.5- pushing 5". Almost every question you ask here you will get an answer for so....fire away!

Yeah thanks chad...

So what about the PH? What is your tank at? and does that make a huge difference?

Like I said my tank is 7.3 and the lake I got the bass from is like 8.2. What do you think?

As long as you aclimate it right it won't be a problem. I believe mine is about 6.8. To tell you the truth PH isn't really that critical for most fish. PH would be my last concern.

As long as it's stable the bass should be able to adapt just fine. LMB occur in a variety of habitats across the country where levels of pH and hardness differ a lot. Though yours came from a water source with a pH of 8.2 there is no reason to think that it cannot adjust to the new water. Just make sure it's stable and does not change a lot or suddenly.

As far as growth is concerned, you better start planning for a larger tank soon. LMB grow fast, I'm not sure about SMB (never kept them) but it's probably not much different. My current bass was about an inch in June when I netted him, currently he is about 6".

nice, i would keep you tank pretty cold, SMB like deep cold water. and maybe dim your lights so the fish dont get to stressed out at first.

Welcome to MFK!!!

Believe it or not, my LMB was caught in a MS farm pond and placed into my brackish tank with not so much as a sneeze from the bass. He went from a pH (in the bucket) of 6.9 right into 8.0 and took food within 15 minutes. It wasn't my plan to do that. But, try telling your 6 Y/O nephew to "wait for me" before touching anything in the fishroom. Once he was in I didn't want to shock him again by moving him to the tank I wanted him in. He's been in my fat sleeper goby tank now for 6 months and is doing great. He was 1.5lbs the day he was caught so, he's gotta be 2 pounds by now (with the way he's been eating). His size is definitely stressing the 120.

How long is that beast? And is he still in brackish water? That is pretty crazy...Never would have thought to put a bass in a brackish tank!

Chad

He's not that big. Only 16" or so. And, yes, he's still in the brack tank. I'm setting up a new 270 that I'll move him into along with my red bay snooks and a pair of sunshine yellow oscars.

Wow what a beast! I cannot wait until mine is that big. Mine is only about 4.5" right now. Eats like he is 2' though lol.
