About Angelfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The common rule of thumb with angels is start with 6 and wait for a pair to form. Once there is a pair remove the other four by giving them a separate tank or rehome because the pair will cease to tolerate others especially when spawning. The easiest way to sex them is after a pair has formed and then getting to observe the spawning process.
You can try adding a single specimen but the original inhabitant may not tolerate a new comer. I prefer wild types but you can add any strain that suits your fancy. The full black seem to be more aggressive imo.

Well thing is she/he was a gift. So by the time I got her I really didnt know what to do. I dont have a spare tank so I think I should try getting another same sized fish and hope for the best.

If you are going to add a single go for smaller. Hopefully it won't be seen as a threat to dominance.

Adding a second angelfish to a community tank is a bad idea. Even if they get on, they will start breeding.

Ok will do, will go to the LFS today to get some supplies. Might or might not come back with a small Angel. I will keep thinking about it in the meantime. Thanks alot for the tips and help !

Thanks alot for the helpful tips everyone ! Right now I am not sure what to, will go to the LFS today for some supplies and will check the Angels. If I see a small and healthy fella I MIGHT grab him but unsure. I dont worry about the bioload much since I overfilter (a canister and a big sponge filter) but we will see.

Quick update, went to the LFS and saw this guy being the only one without a mate in the tank and being bullied for some reason. Grabbed him and so far so good ! These two are constantly together and no aggression. Hope it stays that way. He was also in the "assorted" tank and was dirt cheap. Is he some special type ? The scales look really shiny and I am not good with Angel breeds...

That is a pearlscale angelfish. They are the same species they just have shinier scales aside from that there is no difference. Not uncommon to find a few at a fish store, pretty nice looking especially on larger angels.

As for your tank's stock I agree with the rest you should get a few more angel's then rehome the one's who did not pair up. Angels tend to float around in groups , but who they hangout with does not have any meaning as far as pairing up goes. A pair will only be formed in adult angels who have laid eggs together, and having a male with a female does not guarantee a pair will be formed either hence you should get a group then see who actually pairs.

It doesn't seem like you have interest in raising fry, so having an actual pair is not that important at the end of the day either. I have had two angels live together just fine in my tanks without being a breeding pair without issue. Mixing angels who are already adults can lead to trouble I imagine, but personally I have not had issues with angels that grew up together. I do think the behavior of a pair is fascinating enough that getting a real pair formed is worthwhile.

As for the Bichirs I think they are fine. I have never seen even close to a big albino Senegal(which is what you have). I was trying to grow two regular and one albino ,and the regulars overtook the albino by several inches quickly. I have never had an albino go much past 5 inches even in my larger tanks, nor have I seen much evidence of it online.
