about flower ray

If you get a flower ray post a thread about it's progress and update it often for us to all be informed.

Hi, I've heard by the locals vendors saying that flower ray are not as hardy as any other types of rays, as they wouldn't last that long in a home tank. Is that true? What do you guys think?
Are you looking at getting one or are you looking for info just for curiosity sake? If you don't have a tank to house the potential size they can get then I wouldn't worry yourself!

I see some of you saying they do well for a few years

Well after a few years a tiger or flower should be massive and even a 4ft wide tank would nearly be out grown

The sudden death after a few years could be due to lack of tank space

I have never been tempted to buy a flower or tiger ray because I know long term I would never be able to house one even in a 6ft wide tank

When I posted a picture of a massive tiger ray people said they never get that big in captivity
The main factor from stopping them from getting that big must be lack of tank space which could be a big part in the sudden death

Unless you have or can build a 10x10 tank then why buy them in the first place

They are a slower growing ray but tank space could be a factor with unknown deaths. Mine are over the 4 year mark and are in a 12 x 8 tank. Maybe these rays are more sensitive to space requirements than other rays as I know alot of people who have alot bigger rays in smaller tanks and they do fine.

They maybe slow growing because they are not being fed right

Many have said in this thread that they are very aggressive feeders this cod be due to them not getting the right amount of food

What you also need to take into account is the adult size meaning the new born pup size will also be very large

If a 15inch disk Leo can have a 6-7inch pup the It could be possible for a large adult tiger or flower to have a 8+ pup this would mean some of the new imported pups could be just a few weeks old and starving new born pups that may have even been caught on a hook must be very stressful

there are few flower rays around available atm here in my area, and tank is not a problem for me. Got a few friend here also told me they have bad experience with flower rays many times, so I give it a second thought now. Most that are arrived here are in bad conditions, as they look very skinny.

They are aggresive eaters but eat very slowly compared to a motoro or leo and cannot eat as much. Even when fed multiple times a day they are still slow growing compared to other rays. They require different care than other rays which most people cannot accomplish in a non-species tank. Pups are quite large when born so yes some that are imported could be young causing more problems during shipping. There are alot of reasons off the start why they die it's the ones people have had for 2+ years in captavity that die. These are experienced ray keepers and most the time at the 2+ year mark this can happen in a few days without the keeper ever seeing a problem. If size is a concern you could get a male as it will stay alot smaller than a female henlie will get. But then again maybe they are more sensitive to small tanks than others. Most ray keepers do seem to try these at one time but buying one just because you can afford it doesn't make sense unless you have the means to keep it.

I have a friend who's had two rays with a 24"+ disc in a 500 gallon tank for years and they seem to keep growing....look to be some type of flower or tiger hybrid, but don't know for sure what they are...he doesn't post pics here though.

flowers and tigers have very long tails so a 24inch disk ray will prob be 4ft total

i think tiger would need a higher temp than other rays prob around the 86 mark

like i said i have never owned one so im just pulling things out of the air

yes i like both flower and tiger but even with a 1000 gal i still feel thats to small to buy one
