Hi everyone, I've got a question
I do 20-25% water changes twice a week
Usually, i just get a hose and fill the tank directly with the tap water then i add some water conditioner
Do i need to let the water stand for some time or can i continue like this :nilly: ?
I'm asking because it's would be faily difficult to let the water stand (if need be) since i don't have large containers adapted to fill my 4 ft tank
Thanks a lot

Yeah, it's fine how you're doing it. Alot of people do it this way.

Thanks a lot
It was bugging me since a long time

I add the water conditioner then add the new water.

I was just wondering, are you talking about a python or just a garden hose? if it is just a garden hose how do you match the temp?

if ur fish are healthy, then ur methods are okay. but if ur fishes are getting weak or keeps getting sick, now thats the time u have to change ur methods.

but ur doing good so far, so i guess ull be all right.

I do it with a garden hose running striaght from my sink... Just takes a little tweaking to get the temp right.

If I were to be ask(which i don't do personally) ,I'll put my water in a plastic tank and put an aerator in it for a week then use it,the power of aeration is very useful as I've read they offer a lot of positive purpose.They also use this process in some water treatments/water service companies before distributing it to your home

I think there are many factors relating to water changes;

Size of tank;
Type and quantity of fish;
Filtration used;
Quality of your tap water;

I have a 150g community tank with a Oscar, frontosa, JD, 2 silver dollars, sun-catfish, rainbow fish, bluegills x3. All are juveniles and none have reached adult size except maybe the SD's. I have 2 magnum 220's, & 2 emp 400's filtering. I do MAYBE a 15% water change once a month!!!! I test the water frequently and the ammonia & PH is fine. Water is crystal clear and fish are eating, healthy and all fins are intact. I am no expert but that seems fine to me. I clean the filters only when they get dirty and the water flow gets slower than normal.

I live in the Detroit area and I have always heard/read that we have some of the cleanest water in the nation. It is full of chlorine, you can smell it, it smells like pool water, so I use Prime when adding any water. Been doing it like this for 25+ years of fish keeping and so far so good.

I also think many water changes contributes to fish growth, might be wrong about that but I do believe consistent water changes will get fish to grow bigger. You can tell that the fish that I have do max out at a large size so I limit the water changes to keep the growth slower. Plus doing 20-25% water changes on a 150g tank is too much like work and I do this as a hobby.

Just a laymans opinion and based totally on EXPERIENCE + a little bit of reading about the hobby.

Good luck

Dan

when it comes to a tank that is cycled your biggest concern is the Nitrates not the Ammonia, and if you think it is to much like work then maybe you should buy a python...

on my 150 that is filtered more then yours I do AT LEAST 1 75% water change a week...
